Nearly 400 participants attended the event. In addition to enthusiastic participation from College of Science faculty and students, this year for the first time three local high schools—Tainan First Senior High School (臺南一中), Private Deguang Catholic High School (德光高中), and Tzu Chi Senior High School (慈濟高中) — brought 181 students to observe. In the morning, students toured the graduate poster exhibition and, using a worksheet designed by the Science Education Center, selected three research projects of interest to question and take notes on. They also participated in voting for the “Most Popular Presentation” award. During lunch, the high school students engaged with faculty members from various departments, gaining deeper insight into NCKU’s College of Science academic characteristics and fostering connections between scientific research and high school education.
This year’s event was funded by NCKU’s Office of Research and Development and supported by awards from the Zhang Tong-Sheng Academic (張桐生學術文教基金) and Cultural Foundation and the Tian Ming-Peng Academic Research Foundation (田明朋學術研究基金會). In addition to existing academic awards, a new “Most Popular Presentation” award was introduced, voted on by participating graduate and high school students to enhance interaction and engagement. The afternoon awards ceremony first presented the Graduate Thesis Excellence Awards, including 4 doctoral and 14 master’s students. The research presentations were judged by 19 professors, with each poster evaluated by three reviewers, resulting in 56 academic awards and 5 Most Popular Presentation awards. The College Dean’s Award was presented to Chuo-Min Huang (黃卓敏) from the Department of Photonics and Optical Sciences, advised by Professor Hsu Hsu-Cheng (徐旭政).
Feedback from high school participants indicated significant gains in understanding research processes, applying academic English, and interacting with graduate students. Many students reported that close observation and direct questioning helped them better comprehend research methodologies and thinking processes while appreciating the importance of English in academic communication. Students also praised graduate students for their patient explanations, ability to adapt to different levels, and willingness to engage in interactive Q&A.
Through the “College of Science Research Day,” NCKU aims to encourage students to present and exchange ideas confidently, inspire younger students’ interest and potential in scientific research through high school interactions, and continue fostering interdisciplinary academic growth and talent development.
