Synergy Correlation

The 2025 BIO Asia–Taiwan Exhibition officially opened on July 24 at Taipei Nangang Exhibition Center Hall 1, where National Cheng Kung University (NCKU) presented a joint exhibition (Booth N715A) in collaboration with alliance schools from the Southern Taiwan Academic-Industrial Innovation Platform, NCKU Medical Alliance hospitals, and various industry partners. Nearly 30 teams participated, supported by 22 live pitch sessions, consolidating top-tier biomedical R&D capacity from central and southern Taiwan. The exhibition created integrated opportunities for clinical collaboration and invited global partners to co-develop the future of biomedicine.

Members of the NCKU Medical Alliance include NCKU Hospital, Taichung Veterans General Hospital, Changhua Christian Hospital, Chung Shan Medical University Hospital, E-Da Hospital, and Chiayi Chang Gung Memorial Hospital. Several hospitals presented their latest clinical research and technologies on site. For instance, MegaPro Biomedical, a startup derived from NCKU Hospital, showcased its “CanWellBeing” software. Using proprietary AI algorithms, the system analyzes abdominal CT images in just 3 seconds, generating over 70 health indicators compared to big data for optimized chemotherapy dosing and early detection of chronic and metabolic diseases. It fills the gap left by traditional DEXA or BIA, introducing “muscle quality” as a disease warning indicator, and compresses a 40-minute manual process into an automated 3-second risk assessment.

Eternal Materials exhibited a multi-platform in vitro diagnostics (IVD) technology that incorporates gold nanoparticles, quantum dots, and AI-powered aptamer rapid tests. Their new-generation qualitative and quantitative products, such as fluorescent rapid tests and rapid ELISA kits, enable biochemical analysis without lab referrals, providing immediate and reliable diagnostics for clinical and community-based point-of-care testing (POCT).

Taichung Veterans General Hospital, in collaboration with Huede Healthtech, introduced the Acura AKI Prediction Software—the first of its kind for critical care use. The AI-driven system predicts the risk of acute kidney injury (AKI) within 24 hours for ICU patients, enabling early intervention and reducing the need for dialysis or the risk of mortality.

Changhua Christian Hospital presented the Assistive Syringe Actuator (ASA), an ergonomic device designed for single-handed use. Shaped like a pen and activated by a fingertip switch, it simplifies aspiration and injection, particularly for use in rehabilitation, orthopedics, and ultrasound-guided thyroid injections.

Chung Shan Medical University’s spin-off company Dinkenwell Tech displayed “Zibitor TM Cooling Soothing Hand and Foot Mask”, an innovative comfort care product designed to relieve discomfort caused by hypersensitivity, requiring only 2–5 minutes of application via cooling stimulation.

Chiayi Chang Gung Memorial Hospital unveiled a portable dehydration detector that uses only a small saliva sample and a disposable test strip to non-invasively assess hydration levels. This real-time tool supports long-term monitoring for chronic dehydration and daily diabetes care.

NCKU's efforts in startup cultivation have gained traction, particularly through the launch of the Precision Health Industry Accelerator in 2023, aimed at guiding prototype-stage startups toward product-market fit. Six startups showcased their work this year, including AB DigiHealth, Cardio Metrics, IVD R.E.D Microfluidic Chips, iAmbition Technology, EM Empire, and Lampe Smed. Notably, Lampe Smed was founded under NCKU's in-house incubation program and presented user-friendly caregiving solutions, such as a one-person repositioning mat, a magnetic anti-pressure injury mask holder, and a wire-organizing device to prevent tubing entanglement.

AB DigiHealth introduced icONE, an AI-based embryo quality prediction system for IVF treatment. By combining genomic and physiological data, it predicts implantation success with 92% accuracy and has been clinically shown to increase pregnancy rates by 81%.

Cardio Metrics developed a smart dynamic cardiac function evaluation system using wearable devices to track cardiac motion per beat (CMPB) in real time, enabling immediate assessment during rehabilitation or exercise.

IVD R.E.D Microfluidic Chips showcased an AI-driven kidney disease prediction and CoreTest® real-time detection system, providing rapid, portable, and precise kidney health diagnostics.

iAmbition Technology introduced iSAFE, an integrated smart care platform combining AI-based video recognition, multi-sensor health monitoring, and behavioral analysis algorithms to detect falls, health abnormalities, and send alerts, reducing caregiver burden.

EM Empire partnered with the accelerator to launch Smart Wound Care-at-Home, a service under its e-commerce platform “SkyNurse.” Using AI-powered wound analysis and rapid dressing recommendations with real-time healing tracking, the platform bridges post-discharge care at home.

NCKU has participated in the BIO Asia–Taiwan Exhibition for five consecutive years since 2021, bringing over 150 teams to this international annual event. In 2025, professors including Ming-Long Yeh, Pau-Choo Chung, Jiunn-Der Liao, Michael Warren Hughes, Hung-Yu Sun, and Chen-Kuei Chung led the university's efforts. NCKU also integrated resources from its alliance platform, in collaboration with alliance schools—including faculty and research teams such as Dr. Ya-Ling Huang, Dr. Chih-Yao Hou, and Dr. Te-Hsien Hsu from NKUST; Dr. Chao-Cheng Hsu from NTIN; Dr. Mei-Yi Liao from NPTU; and Dr. Ming-Che Chen and Dr. Chun-Chieh Chu from STUST—NCKU demonstrated its robust capacity for cross-institutional connection and research momentum as the leading institution of the platform.
