Bringing the Joy of Reading to the City: NCKU Library’s “NCKU Book One City” Reflection and Sharing Event

Synergy Correlation

On December 16, 2025, the National Cheng Kung University (NCKU) Main Library held the opening ceremony for the 6th edition of the “NCKU Book One City” (成大 Book 一市) mobile library general education course reflection and achievement presentation. “NCKU Book One City” utilizes the rich collections of NCKU’s Main Library and combines course designs aimed at cultivating “narrative skills,” “creative thinking,” “humanistic care,” and “university social responsibility.” The teaching team, comprised of professional instructors, guided students in creative brainstorming to design unique thematic mobile libraries.

These mobile library minibuses, tailored for Tainan City, foster dialogue, interaction, and mutual feedback with the local community, forming a distinctive learning process. From now until January 8, 2026, the results of the first semester of the 114th academic year will be on display on the 1st floor of the Main Library, showcasing students’ rich reading topics and their reflections on sharing reading with the public. All interested faculty, students, and the general public are welcome to attend.

The bright and spacious library lobby displayed the students’ rich achievements from the “NCKU Book One City” course. Group members enthusiastically shared their creative works, including self-designed posters, mini-games, and various props. During the course, each group independently selected class locations, brainstormed reading themes, and submitted a descriptive reflection of at least 100 words along with photos or videos to the course’s Facebook group before class ended. Guided by instructors, each group conceptualized and discussed their dedicated theme, aligning with the central course topics and allowing students from different departments and grades to integrate diverse knowledge into the teaching process.

This year, the event was strongly supported by the Tainan City Library, which lent books to several groups for service at schools. Additionally, the Sanfa Education Foundation introduced mobile book trucks to some service locations, promoting reading education. During the opening ceremony, the Tainan City Library set up a booth where NCKU students could apply for library cards and participate in fun games with prizes.

Through “NCKU Book One City,” students designed activities and conducted field visits to schools, interacting with principals and school coordinators. These reflections and discussions allowed students to understand the needs of those they served and develop actionable service plans. Participating students became a living textbook, transferring knowledge and skills to the students at service schools. The achievement presentation allowed each group to reflect and learn from others while demonstrating the integration of service and teaching in general education.

Ten student groups presented their outcomes, covering diverse themes: “Reading Together with Hearts (心薪共讀),” “Stem Cells Transforming Magic (幹細胞變身魔法),” “Marine Micro Exploration: From Microbes to Oyster Farms (海洋微觀探索:從微生物到蚵棚生態),” “Playing Science with Newton (跟牛頓一起玩科學),” “An Appointment with Success: Seven Habits of Highly Effective People (與成功有約:高效能人士的七個習慣),” “Play Design (玩設計),” “Animal Protection: Replacement, Reduction, and Refinement in Laboratory Animals (動物保護:實驗動物替代、減量、精緻化),” “Toxins in Daily Life (生活中的毒物),” “Badlands / Thorn Forest (惡地/莿竹林),” and “Brain Gym (大腦健身房).” Groups followed the book truck, bringing their engaging reading themes to multiple sites, including Jiali District Zihlong Elementary School (佳里區子龍國小), Cigu District Jiangong Elementary School (七股區建功國小), Shanshang District Shanshang Elementary School (山上區山上國小), Siaying District Chiachong Elementary School (下營區甲中國小), Annan District Jhenhai Elementary School (安南區鎮海國小), Liouying District Taikang Elementary School (柳營區太康國小), Anping District Tzu Chi Senior High School, Elementary School Division (安平區慈濟國小), Longci District Longci Elementary School (龍崎區龍崎國小), and LAUWULAU Home For The Elderly (老吾老養護中心).

The opening ceremony invited the participation of: Yi-Ming Yang (楊益銘), Associate Manager of Dachan Great Wall Group (大成長城股份有限公司), Chia-Lin Hsieh (謝佳霖), Deputy Director of the Sanfa Education Foundation (財團法人高雄三發教育基金會), Shu-Fen Wu (吳淑芬), Director of LAUWULAU Home For The Elderly, Geng-Yi Su (蘇耿義), Principal of Shanshang Elementary School, and Hsiu-Wen Yan (顏秀雯), Director of Academic Affairs at Tzu Chi Elementary School.

NCKU Library Director Tzu-Fang Fu (傅子芳) expressed gratitude to the CommonWealth Education Foundation's "Hope Reading Project" (天下雜誌教育基金會希望閱讀計畫), Dachan Great Wall Group, Tainan City Library, the Sanfa Education Foundation, participating schools, LAUWULAU Home For The Elderly, and library promotion staff, as well as enthusiastic faculty and students for making this course and event possible. In response to Taiwan’s aging society, the course also engaged students in the elderly care center, allowing them to understand seniors’ lives and provide companionship. Through this activity, students transform knowledge into action, gaining more as they give. Director Fu emphasized that the achievement exhibition is not the conclusion of the course but a continuation of students’ growth. She also announced that next year’s course theme will focus on “Love” and welcomed interested students to participate.

Shu-Fen Wu, Director of LAUWULAU Home For The Elderly, expressed her appreciation for the course, which provided students the opportunity to interact with seniors, understand their needs, and provide companionship. She also invited 91-year-old Ms. Hsu Shun-Chen to share her reflections. Ms. Hsu praised the patience and care students exhibited in interacting with the elderly, highlighting students as representatives of society’s hope and light. In addition, Ms. Hsu, as a friend of the late Professor Ya-Ling Du (杜雅苓), donated Du’s French translation of In the beginning was the Tao (太初有道) to NCKU’s Main Library. Professor Du had served as a French professor at NCKU for many years and passed away earlier this year; her translation will now be preserved at the library.

Yi-Ming Yang, Associate Manager of Dachan Great Wall Group, shared that each year’s achievement exhibition has been deeply moving. He emphasized that the company’s role is to provide continuous support and is honored to contribute to societal welfare. He expressed hope to participate in more such events in the future, nurturing young learners and supporting society.
