Advancing Sustainability, Deepening Global Engagement: 41 NCKU Teams Present Interdisciplinary R&D Achievements

Synergy Correlation

To highlight the staged outcomes of campus research teams in sustainable development and international talent cultivation, the Office of Research and Development (ORD) at National Cheng Kung University (NCKU) held the first-year final review and results-sharing sessions of the “Sustainability Leap Program” and the “Foreign Faculty Career Development Program” from January 27–28 at C-Hub, NCKU Creative Base, Guangfu Campus.

A total of 41 project teams participated, including 33 teams from the Sustainability Leap Program (永續躍升計畫) (Seed and Elite Tracks) and 8 teams from the Foreign Faculty Career Development Program. External experts and scholars were invited to serve as reviewers, while senior NCKU administrators, including Vice President Shih-Wei Chang (張始偉副校長) and Director of Research and Development Chuan-Pu Liu (劉全璞研發長), attended to demonstrate the university’s strong commitment to research development and the cultivation of international academic talent.

In his opening remarks, Vice President Chang emphasized that the meeting invited highly professional, interdisciplinary external reviewers to provide comprehensive evaluations of campus project proposals. In addition to reviewing the achievement of KPIs (Key Performance Indicators), special attention was given to whether the projects aligned with international collaborations and the university’s development strategy. He expressed the hope that in future online searches for “NCKU,” more internationalized courses and research achievements would be visible. To further enhance the university’s global reputation and visibility, NCKU plans to adopt an all-English reporting format, and outstanding presentations will be publicly shared through video dissemination to support the project teams.

The ORD noted that the event was conducted in accordance with previously approved project plans. The first-year implementation period ran from March 1, 2025, to February 28, 2026, and the final review and public sharing mechanism allowed for both the assessment of project outcomes and the promotion of academic exchange within and beyond the university. External experts served as reviewers to ensure that research results were not only publicly shared but also subjected to professional and objective academic evaluation, thereby strengthening quality control. The event was also open to faculty, researchers, and students, which helped increase transparency in research processes, expand campus-wide academic exchange, and promote cross-disciplinary dialogue and experience sharing.

The sessions were held on the 1st and 3rd floors of C-Hub, NCKU Creative Base, using a review-and-public-sharing format that included presentation evaluations, consensus meetings, and feedback. The entire event was recorded as an important reference for project improvement and future implementation. On January 27, the Elite Track teams of the Sustainability Leap Program shared their results, covering themes such as advanced healthcare, smart fisheries, innovative technology development, and disaster prevention mechanisms. In the afternoon, the Foreign Faculty teams presented on research topics including semiconductor thermal management, climate change, and high-performance environmental energy storage systems. On January 28, the Seed Track teams of the Sustainability Leap Program continued with their presentations, with the morning session focused on medical sciences and biotechnology, and the afternoon session covering environmental engineering, urban greening, social governance, and design thinking.

Both programs are two-year initiatives. The Sustainability Leap Program aims to deepen research on key issues through interdisciplinary integration, forward-looking research, international collaboration, and active pursuit of external resources, thereby enhancing NCKU’s research capacity and global visibility. The Foreign Faculty Career Development Program encourages foreign faculty to develop their careers at NCKU, foster horizontal collaboration, and leverage resources from their home countries to expand international cooperation opportunities.

Across the 41 project teams, areas of expertise span science, engineering, biomedicine, and social sciences, with diverse research topics and broad perspectives, fully demonstrating NCKU’s depth and breadth in sustainability research and internationalization efforts. Through the final review and results-sharing sessions, the university aims to enhance the impact of research outcomes and continue driving NCKU’s overall advancement in sustainable development and international academic collaboration.

NCKU Vice President Shih-Wei Chang opened the session by explaining the key focus of the project evaluations and expressed the hope that, in the future, more internationalized courses and research achievements from NCKU would be visible.

The Foreign Faculty Career Development Program, also a two-year initiative, encourages foreign faculty to develop their careers at NCKU and foster horizontal collaborations, while leveraging resources from their home countries to expand opportunities for international cooperation.

The event also invited and was open to the university’s faculty, researchers, and students, aiming to further enhance transparency in the research process, expand campus-wide academic exchange, and promote cross-disciplinary dialogue and experience sharing.
