The Sustainable Finance and Management Academy at National Cheng Kung University (NCKU), in collaboration with Chi Mei Hospital, held the certificate ceremony for the first cohort of 50 “Sustainable Healthcare Managers” at Chi Mei Hospital’s Yongkang Main Campus on April 29. NCKU Vice President Yong-Chun Lee presented the completion certificates for the 2026 Sustainable Healthcare Management Training Program and professional certification, encouraging graduates to apply their expertise in healthcare and sustainability management to support climate action in their institutions and enhance public health in southern Taiwan, advancing the goal of inclusive and sustainable healthcare.
The inaugural cohort consisted of 50 participants from six healthcare institutions in Tainan, representing cross-departmental and multi-level management roles. Supported by Chi Mei Hospital, they completed an intensive 3-month program totaling 30 hours and passed professional qualification assessments. The training equipped participants with expertise in global net-zero initiatives, climate change response, biodiversity risk management, social return on investment (SROI), and low-carbon governance. Through hands-on workshops in sustainability reporting, organizational carbon footprint collaboration, and circular healthcare economy practices, participants gained practical capabilities to implement sustainability initiatives tailored to their respective healthcare settings.
In his remarks, Vice President Lee expressed gratitude to Chi Mei Hospital for its trust in NCKU and the FinTech Business Innovation Research Center, as well as for entrusting the university with the inaugural training program. He also praised the leadership of Chi Mei Hospital Superintendent Hung-Jung Lin and the management team for their strong corporate social responsibility and collaborative spirit, highlighting their model of regional healthcare cooperation. He noted that the program enables participating hospitals to better evaluate and prioritize sustainability initiatives based on their resources and stakeholder expectations, beginning with regulatory requirements from the Ministry of Health and Welfare and gradually expanding into broader areas such as carbon reduction, internal carbon pricing, circular economy applications, sustainability reporting, and SROI-based impact initiatives. He concluded by congratulating both the graduates and the participating hospitals for gaining immediate capability in advancing sustainable healthcare practices.
Chi Mei Hospital Superintendent Hung-Jung Lin stated that the hospital has actively promoted ESG initiatives in recent years and received multiple recognitions, including the Gold Award of the 7th National Enterprise Environmental Protection Awards in 2025, becoming the first healthcare institution in Taiwan to achieve this honor. In March 2026, it was also recognized by the Ministry of Health and Welfare as a model institution for a nursing-friendly workplace, and in 2025 it became the first hospital in Taiwan to obtain ISO 7101 international certification, demonstrating its alignment with global standards in patient safety and management systems. He commended participants for completing the intensive training while maintaining clinical and administrative responsibilities, emphasizing their successful integration of global sustainability frameworks into healthcare practice. He encouraged graduates to serve as sustainability leaders and advocates within their departments, disseminating knowledge and supporting hospital-wide ESG initiatives, while continuing to advance Chi Mei Hospital’s net-zero goals and sustainability achievements.
Established in 2023 by the NCKU FinTech Business Innovation Research Center and the Smart Sustainable Action Industry-Academia Alliance, the Sustainable Finance and Management Academy is dedicated to cultivating internationally competitive talent in sustainability and smart industries. In alignment with Taiwan’s National Development Council talent competitiveness initiative, the academy integrates interdisciplinary faculty resources and collaborates with international certification bodies such as BSI, SGS, and Afnor Group. Over the past three years, it has launched more than 10 international certification training programs covering ESG, CAMP, AIMS, ISMS, and PIMS, training over 500 professionals in sustainability and smart governance, establishing itself as a key talent development base in southern Taiwan.
To support the healthcare sector in aligning with the Ministry of Health and Welfare’s “Healthy Taiwan Deepening Plan,” the academy developed a “Sustainable Healthcare Management” training curriculum in 2025, consisting of four modules and 12 core competencies, taught by experts from industry, government, and academia. In Q4 2025, Chi Mei Hospital selected this program to train 50 mid- to senior-level managers across six affiliated medical institutions, aiming to equip them with ESG-driven capabilities in sustainable healthcare operations, circular economy applications, and net-zero medical practices. The NCKU team designed a comprehensive faculty system and implemented a dual-track training model combining theory and practice to cultivate professional talent for sustainable healthcare development.
NCKU has long been committed to sustainability education and was awarded the Executive Yuan National Sustainable Development Award (Education Category) in 2025, demonstrating outstanding governance performance. Chi Mei Hospital, a leading medical center in southern Taiwan, partnered with NCKU in 2026 to launch the first certification program for Sustainable Healthcare Managers at its Yongkang Main Campus. This cross-institutional initiative reflects its strong commitment to ESG and sustainable healthcare development.
The program brought together management personnel from Chi Mei Hospital’s Yongkang branch and also included participants from affiliated institutions such as Liouying Chi Mei Hospital, Jiali Chi Mei Hospital, Kaohsiung Veterans General Hospital Tainan Branch, Yingxin Hospital, and Hong Surgical Hospital. This collaborative model highlights Chi Mei Hospital’s CSR leadership and strengthens regional healthcare talent development. It also supports the expansion of sustainable healthcare training capacity in southern Taiwan, enabling equitable access to high-quality healthcare services from urban centers to rural areas and advancing the goal of inclusive health and wellbeing.
