Jung-Der Wang (王榮德), Honorary Chair Professor at the College of Medicine, National Cheng Kung University (NCKU), has made outstanding lifelong contributions in the field of occupational medicine and extended his medical expertise toward holistic human care. He has been awarded the 7th Presidential Innovation Award in the Individual Category. President Lai Ching-te presented the award in person on April 28. The honor is well deserved, and the entire university community shares in this recognition with pride.
A press release from the Office of the President stated that the President paid tribute to Professor Wang, noting: “Professor Wang is a key pioneer in establishing Taiwan’s national occupational medicine specialist system. He has long dedicated himself to the study of occupational diseases and has made significant contributions to occupational medicine, worker safety, National Health Insurance policy, and public health. We are grateful for his use of scientific evidence to safeguard workers’ health and safety.”
Professor Jung-Der Wang currently serves as an adjunct professor at the Institute of Public Health, NCKU, and as a physician in the Department of Occupational and Environmental Medicine at NCKU Hospital. His expertise and research fields include environmental and occupational medicine, epidemiology, quality of life studies, cost-effectiveness analysis, and the evaluation of efficacy and safety of traditional Chinese medicine.
Professor Wang is a highly respected senior scholar in the field of public health. He has made continuous and significant contributions to public health in Taiwan and has received numerous academic honors, including four National Science and Technology Council Outstanding Research Awards, the Y. NCKU has appointed him as an Honorary Chair Professor in recognition of his continued support for innovation and development in the field of public health.
In recent years, Professor Wang’s research has focused on two major areas: improving causal diagnostic methods and empirical research in occupational and environmental diseases, and integrating quality-of-life functions with survival functions to evaluate healthcare outcomes. More recently, he has devoted efforts to developing health technology assessment systems integrated into computerized platforms to support precise health decision-making for both the government and individuals.
The Presidential Innovation Award is held biennially and aims to encourage innovation across industry, government, academia, research, and society to address contemporary challenges and shape the nation’s future. The award not only recognizes novel approaches and breakthroughs but also highlights Taiwan’s broad vision and courageous spirit in facing challenges, serving as a new model of innovation.
