National Cheng Kung University (NCKU) Academy of Innovative Semiconductor and Sustainable Manufacturing and National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University (NYCU) Industry-Academia Innovation School joined hands for the first time to co-exhibit at SEMICON Taiwan 2026. The joint pavilion fully highlighted cutting-edge technologies including silicon photonics, high-power components, thermal resistance analysis, advanced packaging, compound semiconductor, and AR/VR semiconductor virtual reality education, comprehensively showcasing the strong capability of Taiwan’s top universities in autonomous research and cultivating next-generation technological talent.
During the exhibition, Minister Cheng-Wen Wu of the National Science and Technology Council (NSTC) and Minister Ying-Yao Zheng of the Ministry of Education visited the pavilion to offer guidance and gain deeper insights into both universities' fruitful achievements in advanced research and cross-disciplinary talent development.
NSTC Minister Cheng-Wen Wu noted that semiconductors represent one of Taiwan's most internationally competitive industries. In the face of rapid developments in artificial intelligence, advanced manufacturing processes, advanced packaging, and next-generation semiconductor technologies, Taiwan must rely not only on continuous industrial innovation but also on academia to cultivate outstanding talent and deepen university-industry collaboration to maintain its lead. Seeing NCKU and NYCU bring their achievements in talent development, scientific research, and industry-academia cooperation to the international stage fully demonstrates the synergy of Taiwan's academic and industrial collaboration. The NSTC will continue to support forward-looking tech R&D and talent cultivation to align academic research closely with industrial needs, driving tech innovation so Taiwan's semiconductor industry maintains its vital global influence.
Dean Wei-Chou Hsu of NCKU’s Semiconductor Academy expressed special gratitude for the strong support from the NSTC's "IC Taiwan Grand Challenge" and the Ministry of Education's National Development Fund. Since its establishment in 2022, the Academy has committed to building comprehensive cutting-edge equipment and cross-disciplinary talent cultivation mechanisms, establishing deep connections with 20 leading corporations, 10 universities, and 3 top research centers across 23 countries, while driving over 150 industry-academia collaboration projects annually. The joint exhibition showcased technologies including silicon photonics, SiC semi-insulating substrates, advanced packaging laser drilling, high-power dynamic and static measurement verification platforms, and an innovative AR/VR virtual laboratory for teaching, illustrating how academic research achieves both groundbreaking discoveries and immediate industrial application.
Dean Yuan-Cheng Sun of NYCU's Semiconductor School stated that participating in SEMICON Taiwan alongside NCKU represents a crucial demonstration of both universities' talent cultivation and R&D capabilities. By integrating cross-school resources and leveraging complementary strengths, the collaboration creates a new model for academic-industrial synergy. Grounded in NCKU's focus on "Cross-Disciplinary Fusion" and NYCU's focus on "Industry-Academia Co-Creation," both sides connect talent, equipment, research, and industry resources. Beyond displaying research outcomes, the pavilion showcased shared equipment built under the NSTC's IC Equipment Initiative and international talent cooperation strategies, underscoring both universities' resolve to strengthen core technology autonomy and empower Taiwan's semiconductor industry globally.
This joint appearance at SEMICON Taiwan 2026 marks a milestone where Taiwan’s premier universities break through intercollegiate barriers to expand research synergies, demonstrating forward-looking vision for next-generation technology layout and high-level talent cultivation to the global semiconductor industry.
