NCKU USR Team and Scholars from the University of Liverpool, Joining Forces to Create Bright Results.
Many partners are working together in various fields to create more possibilities for evil real estate. Based on the spirit of practicing university social responsibility, a collaborative co-creation model is being established in rural areas facing development challenges. On January 11, 2023, Professor Olivier Sykes, head of the Department of Geography & Planning at the University of Liverpool, and Professor Chia-Lin Chen, director of the Planning program, visited Zuozhen under the leadership of Professor Hsiu-Tze Chang, the host of the USR project at National Cheng Kung University to start a series of Zuozhen evil land visits and exchanges.
The first stop was the visit to the Guangrong Experimental Elementary School which inseparable with Tainan City Zuojhen Fossil Park. The close connection between the two originated in the 1970s, when the parents and principal of the Guangrong Experimental Elementary School led students to collect fossils in the area of Tsai-Liao Creek and preserve them. Through the efforts of the school and local partners, the meaning and value of "fossils" in Zuozhen was established. After the merger of Tainan County and City, the "Zuozhen Fossil Park" project became one of the "five cultural parks" in Tainan's "New Ten Flagship Projects". It integrates the former Tsai-Liao Fossil Museum, the Museum of Natural History and the Guangrong Experimental Elementary School in hardware space. Principal Kun-Liang Tsai(蔡坤良) continued to participate in the soft and hard planning of the park during the "integration of museums and schools," incorporating the educational philosophy of the Guangrong Experimental Elementary School.
In addition, in response to the serious aging population and declining birthrate in the local area and its impact on school enrollment, the Guangrong Elementary School transformed into an the experimental elementary school in 2020 and was renamed "Tainan the Guangrong Experimental Elementary School ". In addition to continuing to connect with the Fossil Museum and training children to be small museum guides, the school also sought to connect with external resources such as Tainan Municipal Zuojhen Junior High School, Teach for Taiwan, TSMC, etc. to cultivate music, English, reading, technology and other elements to enhance children's learning motivation and balance the gap in urban and rural learning resources.
The students then went to Zuojhen Junior High School, which has recently made remarkable achievements in technology courses and mountain education. Through diverse learning, students explore their interests and stand out in many technological competitions, achieving excellent results. President Zeng Dingyu (曾鼎育) also showcased the school's bicycle base, leading students on a bike ride to Erliao Viewing Pavilion and even around the island to train their physical ability, maintenance skills, and mentality.
The rich and remarkable diverse learning environment at Zuozhen Junior High School originated from former President Cai Yixing's(蔡宜興) discovery that students' health awareness and learning motivation were not ideal. Based on this, he launched outdoor courses and technology courses to improve these two aspects. President Zeng Dingyu (曾鼎育) continued to promote the highlights of teaching on this basis and taught according to the characteristics of students. Mountain education and technology courses gradually bore fruit, improving the enrollment impact brought by the aging population in rural areas and establishing good interactions between teachers, students, and local communities and the natural environment.
In addition to campus education, the Gōngguǎn Community Development Association (公舘社區發展協會) located in the south of Zuozhen plays an important role in the ecosystem of collaborative learning in adverse areas. The Association utilizes idle space at Ganglin Elementary School as office space and provides multi-functional space for community activities, long-term care courses, mobile medical services, and the sale of community agricultural products such as "Ge Yu Jin."( 葛鬱金) Through the Ministry of Labor's Diversified Employment Plan, the Association attracts young talents with passion to showcase their expertise, building on the existing industries, culture, and tourism development in the community to try new possibilities. One highlight is the development of specialty cuisine, incorporating the history and culture of Siraya (西拉雅) as the context for dish design and blending Chinese and Western culinary arts with local simple ingredients to create exquisite dishes.
The visiting team arrived at the Gōngguǎn Community Development Association during sunset and enjoyed a sumptuous "French Siyala Dinner." The delicious food was highly praised by the guests and the process of developing the community's flavor dishes showcased the resilience of the adverse living spirit. During the limited exchange program, the visiting team saw that through cooperation and resource integration, unlimited possibilities can be sparked.
