"2022 Green Technology Forum and Thesis Award Ceremony" at NCKU, recognizing academic contributions to caring for the Earth.
In order to give back to society and encourage professors and students from relevant departments of universities to engage in innovative research in green technology and environmental pollution prevention, the Ching-En Education Foundation and the Zhen Ding Technology Group established the "Green Technology Paper Award." This initiative aims to establish a platform for industries to discover outstanding talents and introduce academic wisdom. Chairman Ching-Fang Shen of Zhen Ding Technology Group, who grew up in a rural area and was saddened by the pollution of the land; therefore, established the Ching-En Education Foundation to reward academic achievements, hoping to promote environmental protection through education. Chairman Shen stated, "My mission is to use technology to benefit humanity, advance environmental protection, and make the earth a better place. I hope this award can continue to be held and improve over time."
Tsair-Fuh Lin, the president for research and development at NCKU, stated that NCKU and the Ching-En Foundation equally value the issue of sustainable development. Since 2016, NCKU President Huey-Jen Su has made the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) an important bridge for NCKU to communicate with the world, and in recent years, NCKU has been promoting many internationally renowned sustainable development projects in fields such as water, infrastructure, and energy. He expressed his delight that NCKU is hosting this event for the third time this year (2023).
Zhen Ding Technology Group is a global leader in PCB (printed circuit board) manufacturing and emphasizes environmental protection from the source of the manufacturing process. It is also recognized by Apple as one of the most commendable companies in Taiwan for environmental protection. Chi-Kuo Mao, the former premier and NCKU's outstanding alumnus for the year 103, learned about Chairman Shen's latest declaration on sustainability during his journey from the high-speed rail station to NCKU on the 13th. Chi-Kuo Mao stated that Zhen Ding has already set high standards for environmental health and safety, and sustainability is the next level of development. He believes that Chairman Shen will continue to improve and become a benchmark for the world. The green technology field, which was already a focus of attention, is now a global trend, and he hopes that this year's award winners will continue to excel.
Green technology is currently a trend in environmental protection. The "Green Technology Paper Award" established by the Ching-En Education Foundation included topics related to sustainable science fields such as water resources, hydraulic engineering, and ecological conservation starting from 2020, bringing it closer to internationally relevant issues. Last year (2022), 74 master's and doctoral theses were received, with themes related to "environmental technology issues" and "climate change and sustainable development issues." A panel of expert scholars evaluated the papers based on four criteria: relevance to the topic, innovation, future application value, and accuracy and rigor. After three rounds of review, 12 outstanding papers were selected, with a total prize money of NT$1.4 million, and the Green Technology Forum and Award Ceremony was held this year (2023), inviting the master's and doctoral students who received the awards to share their research results.
The issue of achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2050 is currently a topic of global concern, and the award ceremony on the 13th also held a green technology forum to promote the exchange of research insights across various sectors. Ying-Ying Lai, Director of the Waste Management Division of the Environmental Protection Administration of the Executive Yuan, shared the "Current Situation and Future Direction of Promoting Resource Circularity and Zero Waste." Yang Gu, Chair Professor of the Department of Chemical Engineering at National Taiwan University of Science and Technology (NTUST), analyzed the global trend of investment in net-zero emissions. Participants included Cheng-En Ke, Executive Director of the Ching-En Education Foundation; Ting-Chuan Lee, General Manager of Zhen Ding Technology Group; former political deputy minister of the Executive Yuan and Professor of the Institute of Sustainable Management and Environmental Education at National Taiwan Normal University Hsin-Cheng Yeh; and Jui-Fen Yang, Director of the Pingtung Forest District Office, Forestry Bureau, Council of Agriculture, Executive Yuan. The afternoon session featured presentations of the winning papers, chaired by Fang-Shian Shiu, Environmental Engineering Manager of Zhen Ding Technology Group, and Liang-Ming Whang, Director of the Sustainable Environment Laboratory and Director of the Environmental Health and Safety Center at NCKU.
The Ching-En Education Foundation's "Green Technology Paper Award," with the principle of "Advancing Technology for Human Welfare; Enhancing Environmental Protection for a Better Earth," was organized by the Department of Environmental Engineering at National Taiwan University (NTU) for a total of five sessions from 2013 to 2017. There were 185 submitted papers, resulting in 45 awarded papers, with a total prize fund of up to 6.86 million NT dollars. From 2020 to 2022, the award was organized by the Department of Environmental Engineering at NCKU. In 2020-2021, a total of 138 master's and doctoral theses were submitted, with 24 outstanding papers selected, and the total prize fund amounted to 2.8 million NT dollars.
