The 2023 NCKU Google Workshop focuses on exploring topics related to semiconductors and artificial intelligence.
The National Cheng Kung University (NCKU) College of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, the College of Intelligent Computing, the College of Smart Semiconductors and Sustainable Manufacturing, in collaboration with Google, jointly organized the "2023 Google NCKU Silicon/AI Workshop" on August 18th at the Department of Electrical Engineering Building 1 on the Tainan campus. The one-day workshop brought together 10 experts and scholars along with technical experts from Google to discuss the topic of Hardware AI CoDesign, leading nearly a hundred faculty and students to explore the current status and future development trends of semiconductors and artificial intelligence.
During the opening ceremony of the workshop on the morning of the 18th, NCKU President Meng-Ru Shen personally attended and expressed that universities are centers of knowledge convergence, emphasizing the importance of translating interdisciplinary research outcomes into industry applications and real-world practices, urging NCKU faculty and students to leverage the advantages of being a comprehensive research university to "apply science for the betterment of society."
Google has been actively investing in Taiwan in recent years, engaging in various innovative technologies and cultivating talents in software, hardware, and semiconductor fields. In support of silicon research and talent development in Taiwan, Google has launched the "Taiwan Silicon research program," aiming to establish a semiconductor research community in Taiwan by gathering relevant academic research teams, contributing to Taiwan's efforts to build world-class semiconductor research capabilities.
Dr. Daniel Marlow, Managing Director of Google Taiwan and an alumnus of NCKU's Department of Electrical Engineering (Class of '75), returned to his alma mater on the 18th and was delighted to reunite with his former professors and university classmates. Dr. Marlow stated that Google hopes to promote better research interaction through development projects and academic connections, cultivate future technology talents, develop future technologies, and collectively have a greater impact on the international community in the future.
Dean Pau-Choo Chung of the College of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at NCKU mentioned that since 2020, Google has initiated the University Relations Program, maintaining close cooperation with NCKU in the fields of medicine, semiconductors, and artificial intelligence technology. In 2022, they jointly established the "NCKU Google Collaboration Program Committee," significantly guiding research cooperation directions and facilitating several projects focusing on healthcare, AI, semiconductors, etc. It is expected that deeper cooperation and information sharing in the future will demonstrate the largest university framework for collaboration with Google in Taiwan, enhancing academic research capabilities and deepening talent development in research and development.
The "2023 Google NCKU Silicon/AI Workshop" focuses on the theme of "Hardware AI CoDesign," inviting NCKU experts and scholars along with Google technical experts to discuss the future technology of semiconductors and AI. After the opening ceremony on the morning of the 18th, Dr. Daniel Marlow from Google Taiwan introduced the latest AI products and their prospective applications at Google, and also explained Google Taiwan's semiconductor research program direction. Additionally, Mr. Aimin Zhu, Manager of Google's University Relations Program for Northeast Asia, introduced Google's overall cooperation projects with universities in Taiwan, sharing project directions and technical details to enrich attendees' knowledge and information.
NCKU also invited numerous expert scholars to give speeches. Professor Ming-Der Shieh from the Department of Electrical Engineering at NCKU introduced current AI developments in hardware architecture and AI software computing world, highlighting the challenges and opportunities in the era of large-scale artificial intelligence models. The workshop also featured Professor Cheng-En Huang from the Department of Electrical Engineering at the University of Washington in Seattle, discussing real-world applications of artificial intelligence and explaining future AI technologies and applications from a software perspective. Professor Gwo-Giun Lee from the Department of Electrical Engineering at NCKU introduced the machine learning technology of architecture compilers in Google XLS, illustrating the technological evolution from AI to Design AI. Finally, a comprehensive panel discussion was moderated by Dr. Lih-Yih Chiou, Chief Technology Officer of the College of Intelligent Computing at NCKU, inviting experts from various fields such as Professor Cheng-En Huang, Google semiconductor team engineer En-Hao Zhang, Professor Chung-Ho Chen from the Department of Electrical Engineering at NCKU, Vice Dean Hung-Yu Kao of the College of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at NCKU, and Director Huai-Hsuan Tseng of the Institute of Medical Informatics at NCKU. They jointly explored the role of AI in life and future development from multiple perspectives such as hardware, technology, and practical applications.
The workshop attracted a large number of participants, and the interaction and feedback on-site were enthusiastic. There were in-depth discussions on the forward-looking technology of semiconductor research and AI applications in Taiwan, deepening the mutual understanding and cooperation between Google experts and NCKU professors and scholars. It is hoped that through this workshop, the development trends of advanced technology can be grasped, and technical talents that meet future industry needs can be cultivated, supporting Taiwan's semiconductor and AI industries, promoting industry-academia cooperation, and creating a win-win situation for industry and academia.
