Before the second anniversary of the establishment of the Quanta-NCKU Joint AI Research Center, a lighting ceremony was held this morning (Dec. 15th) on the 6th floor of the Information Building at the Cheng Kung campus. With the completion of the new space and facilities, both Quanta and NCKU will continue cultivating developments in the fields of smart healthcare, smart campus, and smart agriculture. They will establish the QOCA® and MiinStore platforms, and promote the industry-academia system based on existing AIoT technologies.  Additionally, they plan to collaborate with industry, government, academia, and research for future digital innovation.

On the morning of the Dec. 15th, Quanta Chairman Barry Lam(林百里) congratulated and encouraged the center’s inauguration through a prerecorded video. Quanta Chief Technology Officer Ted Chang (張嘉淵) was graudated from Department of Aeronautics and Astronautics and was awarded as Outstanding Alumnus of NCKU in 2021. He presented commemorative gifts, expressing gratitude to former NCKU President Huey-Jen Su (蘇慧貞) for her support in promoting collaboration between the two parties. (Su is currently the Acting Dean of the Miin Wu School of Computing.) Chang stated, “What we are doing is like an AI farming team.” He hopes to promote broader AI development and applications based on the platform developed in collaboration with NCKU. The aim is to continue developing interdisciplinary innovations, align with international standards, and nurture future AI talents.

Yi-Bing, Lin (林一平) is the Director of the Quanta-NCKU Joint AI Research Center. He was graduated from Department of Electrical Engineering. He expressed gratitude to President Su for providing him the opportunity to contribute to his alma mater. Returning to serve at his alma mater, he sees himself as an “utility man (工具人)” and hopes to develop an open-source Large Language Model (LLM) specific to NCKU, providing tools to support the development of AI on the campus. The goal is to elevate NCKU’s AI research to a world-class level.

The location of the Quanta-NCKU Joint AI Research Center is strategically chosen in the Information Building at the Cheng Kung campus, sharing the same building as the NCKU Computer and Network Center. In addition to serving as a research and technology showcase space, the facility will be used for technical seminars conducted by NCKU professors and Quanta staffs. Plans include inviting international experts or Quanta researchers for exchanges in the future. The space is expected to consolidate comprehensive AI computing resources, providing excellent research and teaching support, and nurturing talents with AI innovation capabilities.

The Quanta-NCKU Joint AI Research Center is established in 2022. Quanta gave high-performance Quanta AI server to the center as a gift, and annually provides equipment donation fees and commissioned project funds. The center has completed the establishment of the campus smart environment ICT Common Trench. Moreover, the center introduced the QOCA® AI platform and the IoTtalk Internet of Things platform. The “MiinStore” platform integrates artificial intelligence, big data, and the characteristics of the Internet of Things. Future plans involve continued collaboration with the Miin Wu School of Computing, College of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, and the Computer and Network Center. The aim is to integrate NCKU’s ICT resources, share and apply the big data generated by NCKU, and promote outstanding development in education and research.

The Quanta-NCKU Joint AI Research Center has demonstrated fruitful interdisciplinary cooperation in smart healthcare. Dr. Yi-Shan Tsai (蔡依珊) is an Associate Professor from Department of Medical Imaging at NCKU’s College of Medicine. In 2022, a collaborative industry-academia project with Tsai won the 19th National Innovation Award, specifically the "Clinical Innovation Award." Conducted in collaboration with NCKU Hospital, the research project on telemedicine has been implemented in multiple clinical settings, and future industrial applications are expected. Combining the technical expertise of both parties, the liver AI pathology digital analysis has achieved remarkable results. Additionally, the collaborative project with NCKU students and the Department of Pediatrics proposed an automatic bone age assessments model and height prediction model, offering a comprehensive assessment method. The project is expected to assist physicians in formulating effective treatment strategies for patients.
