NCKU Honorary Doctorate Recipient Dr. Vigor Yang Awarded the 2025 Reed Aeronautics Award by AIAA
Dr. Vigor Yang, a globally recognized expert in aerospace propulsion and an Honorary Doctor of Engineering from National Cheng Kung University (NCKU), has been honored with the 2025 Reed Aeronautics Award by the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA). The Reed Aeronautics Award is the highest honor bestowed by AIAA for achievements in the field of aeronautics, recognizing exceptional contributions across industry, academia, and government sectors.
This prestigious award acknowledges Dr. Yang’s groundbreaking work in aerospace combustion physics, propulsion system innovation, and advancements in aerospace engineering education and literature. With over 40 years of experience, Dr. Yang's expertise spans a wide range of critical areas, including: combustion dynamics in propulsion and power systems, multi-scale fluid and combustion modeling and simulation, energetic material combustion, high-pressure transport phenomena and thermodynamics, nanotechnology applications in propulsion and energetics, and data science and technology in aerospace applications.
Dr. Vigor Yang, a distinguished Taiwan-born aerospace propulsion expert, pursued his graduate studies in the United States and is currently a professor at the Georgia Institute of Technology. His outstanding contributions to aerospace engineering have earned him multiple prestigious honors, including: Member of the U.S. National Academy of Engineering (NAE), Academician of Academia Sinica, Foreign Member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering (CAE), and Foreign Member of the Indian National Academy of Engineering (INAE). Dr. Yang played a critical role in assisting NASA in solving engine combustion instability issues, contributing significantly to aerospace propulsion advancements. In 2019, National Cheng Kung University (NCKU) recognized his achievements and long-standing support by awarding him an Honorary Doctorate in Engineering.
For the past 20 to 30 years, Dr. Yang has actively collaborated with NCKU’s Department of Aeronautics and Astronautics, and related disciplines, particularly in fostering aerospace research and talent cultivation. His contributions include:
1. Serving as an advisor for the development of NCKU’s Guiren Aerospace Testing Facility, aiding in the construction of the high-speed wind tunnel and the combustion and jet propulsion laboratory.
2. Playing a key role in establishing the Wong Tsoo Systems Engineering Research Center in 2022, which promotes academic collaboration, advanced technology projects, and strategic research initiatives.
3. Facilitating international collaboration among Georgia Institute of Technology, Purdue University, Taiwan’s National Chung-Shan Institute of Science and Technology (NCSIST), and NCKU to strengthen global aerospace research partnerships.
