Synergy Correlation

Students from National Cheng Kung University not only excel in academics but also bring glory to the school in sports. The 112th National Games have concluded with NCKU students securing a total of 2 gold and 3 bronze medals. Graduate students Guan-Ling Fang and Chen-You Wang achieved the highest honors. Fang set new records in the women's 49kg weightlifting competition, breaking records in snatch, clean and jerk, and overall categories, while also refreshing the national record. Wang secured the gold medal in the men's decathlon with a total score of 7251. President Shen Mengru expressed gratitude to the students for bringing glory to NCKU and admired the athletes for balancing sports and academics.

NCKU students participated in nine events at the 112th National Games, including men's athletics, women's weightlifting, men's swimming, women's badminton, women's indoor volleyball, men's football, women's athletics, women's table tennis, and women's basketball. The award-winning achievements include:

Chen-You Wang: Men's Decathlon (Gold Medal)
Guan-Ling Fang: Women's Weightlifting 49kg Category (Gold Medal)
Yu-Xiang Wang: Men's Swimming 400m Medley Relay (Bronze Medal)
Chen-Ping Zhu: Men's Swimming 100m Butterfly (Bronze Medal)
You-Qun Cai: Women's Indoor Volleyball Team Event (Bronze Medal)

Fang and Wang, both national-level athletes and graduate students at the Institute of Physical Education, Health & Leisure Studies, dedicated significant efforts in preparing for national and international events over the past year, including the Asian Games and the National Games. Despite the rigorous training, both students did not neglect their academic responsibilities. Fang returned to campus for classes every week during training, while Wang, who trained at the National Sports Training Center in Zuo-Ying, also attended classes on campus once a week. The institute arranged for relevant course instructors to provide one-on-one teaching at the training center. During training gaps, both students engaged in online learning through various courses.

Fang mentioned that not being at the training center full-time meant she couldn't receive tutoring for extracurricular academic work. Currently, she manages academics alongside competitions and training, acknowledging the greater pressure but striving to maintain balance. Fortunately, she shares a research room with Wang and basketball student Jia-Yu Zhuang, providing mutual assistance and encouragement. Wang emphasized the helpfulness of studying for sports competitions, citing the example of the "Research Methodology" course. It enabled him to find ways to improve techniques during training using research methods and identify additional information and training methods related to international weightlifting competitions.

Distinguished Professor Chia-Liang Tsai and Professor Shang-Chun Ma, both distinguished professors in the Institute of Physical Education, Health & Leisure Studies, expressed that the two national-level student-athletes have excellent learning attitudes. They seize opportunities to inquire and absorb knowledge, keeping pace with course progress. The professors appreciate the students' dedication and effort.

Fang's outstanding performance in the 112th National Games was remarkable, breaking records in snatch, clean and jerk, and overall categories. Her total of 187 kg not only broke the national competition record but also set a new national record. Fang has represented the country in major international events, securing the 4th place in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. After the National Games, she will proceed to overseas competitions to accumulate achievements for the hope of representing the country in the 2024 Paris Olympics.

Wang, a native of Tainan, achieved a gold medal with a score of 7655 in the 111th National College Sports Games, breaking a record set by Gu Jinshui 36 years ago. In the 112th National Games, he secured a gold medal with a score of 7251 in the decathlon. The decathlon is the ultimate physical challenge for track and field athletes, lasting two days and comprising 100m, long jump, shot put, high jump, 400m, 110m hurdles, discus throw, pole vault, javelin throw, and 1500m events.
