"The first session of the 'Green Economy X Sustainability Transition' lecture series: Sustainable Finance and Carbon Credit."
The lecture took place on the evening of the 16th at the International Conference Hall, Kuang-Fu Campus, in the second lecture room, with an opening speech by Professor Chuan-Pu Liu, the president of NCKU ORD. Professor Liu mentioned that in today's rapidly changing society, sustainable development, along with AI and carbon, is considered crucial for the future. He encouraged everyone to actively learn during their university studies and prepare adequately for future employment.
During the speech, Mr. Hsiang-Hsu Lin raised a thought-provoking question, prompting attendees to contemplate the relationship between ESG and carbon reduction. He emphasized that while ESG stands for environmental protection, social responsibility, and corporate governance, its true meaning lies in assessing a company's operational adaptability and financial condition in the ever-changing environment. He clarified that ESG is not equivalent to carbon reduction and cautioned investors to consider a company's performance and strategy in social and governance aspects, guarding against greenwashing.
Moreover, Mr. Lin highlighted the impact of finance on the industrial landscape and rules of the game. He pointed out that many banks currently offer advisory services for financing and bond investments, directing funds towards low-carbon and resilient companies. He emphasized the need for companies to make progress in carbon reduction and ESG to cope with financial pressures from consumers, investors, banks, and the supply chain.
Furthermore, Mr. Lin emphasized the crucial role of consumers in achieving carbon neutrality, stating that "carbon neutrality without consumer participation is a deception." He suggested that citizens play a vital role in carbon reduction, and the next stage of GreenHopeTW 's goals is to create a green business district around NCKU, promote sustainable consumption, and encourage sustainable businesses through personal carbon passbook service. This initiative aims to cultivate the awareness that "carbon is personal assets" among students.
