NCKU Library's second-hand book sale celebrates its 20th anniversary, inviting book enthusiasts to explore thousands of books
The annual NCKU Library second-hand book sale, held for 20 consecutive years, is a highly anticipated key event. This year (2023), among the 409 book donors, there is enthusiastic participation even from those who mailed their books from afar, including from Keelung. The sale has amassed a total of 10,216 second-hand books, covering various categories such as applied sciences, Western literature, fiction, and linguistics. At the opening event on the 11th, many readers took advantage of their lunch break to queue up, hoping to be among the first to enter and purchase books.
The NCKU Library's second-hand book sale in 2021 was initially changed to an online sale due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2022, the sale returned to physical form during the pandemic, raising a record-breaking number of second-hand books, attracting many readers. Han-Ching Wang, the director of the NCKU Library, stated that this year (2023) marks the 20th consecutive year of the second-hand book sale, with the volume of donations being one of the highest ever. With a wide range of book categories, it is believed that all readers can find treasures here.
The proceeds from the NCKU Library's 2023 second-hand book sale will be fully donated to the "Tainan Private Catholic Charity Foundation." To express their gratitude, the charity foundation handcrafted unique thank-you certificates to be presented to NCKU. Father Fr. Hugo PETER, the founder of the charity foundation, was moved to see the long queue of people waiting to buy books at the opening event on the 11th. Fr. Hugo PETER expressed that it is meaningful for modern people to spend time reading books instead of using their phones. With the encouragement and assistance of the NCKU Library's second-hand book sale, the charity foundation will continue to spread more love and care.
With an initial commitment to respecting intellectual property and cherishing resources, the NCKU Library's second-hand book sale has been held since 2004. Over the years, the accumulated donations have exceeded 100,000 books, raising over NT$3 million. Many people believe that donating books can continue the transmission of knowledge and do good deeds, making it very meaningful. Every year, they eagerly participate, hoping that this act of kindness will continue year after year, spreading warmth through the cycle of knowledge.
The Tobias Social Welfare Foundation, under the jurisdiction of the Catholic Diocese of Tainan, was founded in 2010 by Father Hugo Peter, a Swiss priest who came to Taiwan from overseas in 1971. To demonstrate the love of Jesus Christ and uphold the service motto of "Dignity ~ Let Everyone Have It," the foundation provides services for children with developmental delays, friends with physical and mental disabilities, and their families in the Tainan area. Since 2014, the foundation has extended its services to community elders and bedridden individuals with disabilities, contributing to an aging society and allowing more people in need to feel the love of the Lord.
Starting from today until September 15th, the NCKU Library's second-hand book sale will commence at 10 AM daily in the lobby of the main library on the Cheng-Kung Campus.
