The 2023 SATU Presidents' Forum held its Steering Committee Meeting in India on November 17th to 18th
The annual Steering Committee Meeting of the Presidents' Forum of Southeast and South Asia and Taiwan Universities (SATU) was held from November 17th to 18th, 2023, at the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IIT Bombay) in India. Representatives from various countries, including India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Sri Lanka, Taiwan, Thailand, and Vietnam, attended the meeting as members of the Steering Committee.
The meeting, chaired by Vice President and International Affairs Director Hong-Chen Chen of National Cheng Kung University (NCKU), emphasized the significance of the SATU Presidents' Forum as an important international alliance. It highlighted the substantial cooperation among member universities facilitated through initiatives such as the Joint Research Scheme (JRS) and the SATU Mobility Action for Regional Talents (SMART Program), leading to the gradual development of SATU into its current scale. To diversify development and cooperation, amendments to the SATU Charter were proposed this year to inject new elements into the alliance, aligning it with future developments.
Subhasis Chaudhuri, President of IIT Bombay, a co-hosting member institution, emphasized SATU's role in connecting universities in Southeast Asia, South Asia, and Taiwan. He emphasized the benefits of network resource sharing among member schools to enhance education and research quality while mutually supporting each other in increasing international visibility, thus elevating SATU's global influence over the long term.
During the meeting, the 2023 SMART International Startup Competition online award ceremony took place with President Chaudhuri and the NCKU Vice President Chen as guest presenters. Six winning students connected remotely to receive their awards and share their competition experiences. In the afternoon, there were presentations by S. Sudarshan, Vice President of Academic and Basic Affairs, and Sachin C. Patwardhan, Vice President of Research and Development, both from IIT Bombay, followed by a talk by Abhay Karandikar, Secretary of the Indian Government's Department of Science and Technology, on promoting collaboration to advance national scientific research. Finally, Mohd Fadhil Bin Md Din, Director of Sustainable Campus at Universiti Teknologi Malaysia, a representative of the Steering Committee, shared the school's experience in developing a sustainable campus.
On November 18th, participants visited IIT Bombay's campus and distinctive research facilities. During the conference, NCKU actively engaged in discussions with Vietnamese schools to explore opportunities for bilateral cooperation.
The SATU Presidents' Forum was initiated in 2003 by NCKU and presidents of prominent universities in Southeast Asia. It was formally established in 2006 with the aim of creating a platform for exchanging experiences and fostering international cooperation between universities in Taiwan and Southeast and South Asia. Currently, the forum has 102 member universities from 10 countries in Southeast and South Asia.
