The sustainable wave is sweeping across the globe, and as members of National Cheng Kung University (NCKU), we can certainly feel NCKU's tireless efforts in promoting sustainability. Sustainability has become one of the core values valued in our country, as we actively pursue sustainable development, respond to global sustainability initiatives, and integrate local development needs. NCKU aspires to continue leading this wave and become a benchmark for sustainability in Taiwan and internationally.

In response to various suggestions, the Research and Development Office is committed to assisting faculty members and students in meeting their sustainability knowledge needs and taking immediate action. We have specially invited the organizers of the "Earth Solution 2023 Sustainable Design Action Annual Conference," the 5% Design Action Social Design Platform, to provide guidance on campus and lead our faculty and student teams in examining their own sustainability capabilities.

The Earth Solution, a flagship annual sustainable design event hosted by the 5% Design Action Social Design Platform in April this year, focused on the core concept of "breakthrough innovation and accelerated action." It featured six thematic sessions covering 12 major industrial topics spanning "sustainable transformation," "sustainable finance," "smart transportation," "holistic health," "sustainable cities," "food transformation," "low-carbon buildings," "local revitalization," "social transformation," "sustainable marketing," and "sustainable education." The event brought together leaders from academia, industry, research, and social sectors. It was honored with the 2023 Taiwan Sustainable Action Award SDG17 Global Partner Silver Award.

Senior service designer Huang Yuhao began by prompting everyone to consider why universities must embrace sustainability. Many students and faculty members believe that integrating sustainability into universities is essential because universities are the cradle of nurturing future talent. By instilling sustainability thinking in universities, students can develop concepts before entering the workforce, which will contribute to promoting sustainable development in the future.

Furthermore, the workshop emphasized that sustainability can be driven by service design to foster sustainable innovation. Five key points were highlighted: "Directionality of Design," "From Single Point to Holistic," "Experience as Theater," "Designing Pre-, During-, and Post-Behaviors," and "Interdisciplinary Collaboration."

1. Directionality of Design: Conduct a situational analysis and redefine problems to ensure that efforts are directed efficiently.

2. From Single Point to Holistic: First, take a comprehensive inventory of the current situation, understand the available resources and advantages, clarify stakeholders, and finally integrate data visually to present it in an understandable manner.

3. Experience as Theater: When driving something new, it's like managing a series of experiences. Consider the venues, service providers, and users within these experiences, and then design a service.

4. Designing Pre-, During-, and Post-Behaviors: Every experience involves a continuum, with different emotional journeys before, during, and after interactions. This is often referred to as an experience journey map, which illustrates the user's thoughts during product use.

5. Interdisciplinary Collaboration: Solving a problem often requires various expertise. Different fields have different professional talents. Finding the right/lacking resources can enhance the project.

Today, sustainability issues are global, yet many people don't know where to start. Through this workshop, participants learned that there are methods and frameworks for sustainability. By utilizing these tools effectively, we can better address sustainability challenges and implement sustainable actions.

The Sustainable Interdisciplinary Knowledge Training Workshop invited the 5% Design Action social design platform to provide on-campus guidance.

The Taiwan landmark sustainable design action conference, "Earth Solution," organized by the 5% Design Action social design platform in April this year, was awarded the 2023 Taiwan Sustainable Action Award SDG17 Global Partner Silver Award.

Through this workshop, everyone has learned that there are methods and frameworks for sustainability.
