NCKU's Contract Staff Enjoy a Generous Salary Increase of 7% in 2024, Bringing Happiness and Satisfaction.
As a leading flagship university, National Cheng Kung University (NCKU) has decided to implement a comprehensive 7% salary increase for its contract administrative staff in 2024. Starting from 2024, the minimum starting salary for university graduates hired as contract staff at NCKU will be raised to NT$36,000. Additionally, NCKU has removed the salary cap for various positions held by contract staff, allowing for salary grades to extend upwards and providing more opportunities for advancement. The increased personnel costs resulting from this salary adjustment will be covered by funds from collaborative projects with industry and academia.
NCKU Vice President Ching-Chang Lee emphasizes that contract staff are essential logistical support for the university's development. Their contributions in teaching, research, and industry-academia collaboration are invaluable and must be recognized with a sense of well-being. Since President Meng-Ru Shen took office in 2023, one of his primary goals has been to create a happier campus environment. Salary is a key factor in fostering happiness, and while increasing payroll expenses, it boosts morale among contract staff, fosters unity, and aids in talent recruitment. Overall, this positive spiral effect will contribute to the university's development, making the investment worthwhile.
After the salary adjustment for contract staff at NCKU, the minimum starting salary for university graduates hired as contract staff is NT$36,000, and the salary cap for the highest grade has been removed, with salary grades extending upwards by several levels. Additionally, there are increased opportunities for promotion, including the addition of new salary grades and an increase in the proportion of staff eligible for promotion. It is estimated that the 7% salary increase policy for contract staff will result in an additional expenditure of over NT$15 million annually.
Vice President Lee pointed out that NCKU's industry-academia collaboration has yielded excellent results, with funding for collaborative projects showing a long-term upward trend. Despite experiencing a negative growth of 8.89% in 2021 due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, industry-academia collaboration funding has seen a significant increase of 10.25% in 2022 as the pandemic situation improved and restrictions were lifted. NCKU currently has over 350 contract staff members, all of whom are eligible for the 7% salary increase policy.
