NCKU Electrical Engineering alumni donate NT$10 million scholarship, boosting support for incoming students in 2024.
The alumni from the Class of '59 of the Department of Electrical Engineering at NCKU are strongly supporting their younger peers in pursuing excellence. For the incoming class of 2024 (Class of '113), they have provided at least NT$10 million in scholarships. Chairman Kuo-Chao Wang, Chairman of Creative Technology, has established the Creative Technology Entrance Scholarships, offering a total of NT$8 million to two outstanding applicants. Additionally, with collective support from other '59 alumni, the Electrical Engineering Department's Purdue Dual Degree Program has added a special NT$2 million entrance scholarship for top performers in subject-specific exams.
Chairman Kuo-Chao Wang has a deep emotional connection to his alma mater and established the Creative Technology Scholarship in 2018. Originally offering one scholarship with a maximum total of NT$4 million, this year it has been increased to two scholarships with a total of NT$8 million. Through interviews and selection processes, Creative Technology has chosen two scholarship recipients from among many applicants with excellent test scores: Yu-Xuan Song from Kaohsiung Fengshan High School's Science and Math Gifted Class and Yan-Hua Huang from Changhua Jingcheng High School.
Yu-Xuan Song expressed his passion for physics and programming and his admiration for NCKU, where many of his family and friends have graduated from or are currently attending. He chose NCKU's Electrical Engineering Department for its comprehensive and diverse academic fields, allowing him to fully utilize his strengths.
Yan-Hua Huang thanked his high school's experimental class for providing resources that enabled him to explore different disciplines at various universities. He described NCKU as a comprehensive university with a strong blend of technology and humanities, boasting robust schools of medicine, design, management, and social sciences. He appreciated the opportunities for interdisciplinary learning and the chance to discover his own interests and strengths through diverse teaching methods.
Director Meng-Hsueh Chiang of the Electrical Engineering Department highlighted the Elite Training Program, the Purdue Dual Degree Program, which spans 3+1+1 years: three years at NCKU followed by a year at Purdue University in the United States, earning both a bachelor's degree from NCKU and eligibility for Purdue's master's program. All five inaugural students of the Purdue Dual Degree Program have been accepted into Purdue University's Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) graduate program this year.
Supported by alumni, the Purdue Dual Degree Program has added a NT$2 million entrance scholarship this year, offering outstanding subject-specific exam performers the chance to receive this scholarship. This includes a NT$1 million study abroad scholarship to ease financial burdens during their fourth year exchange at Purdue University, enabling focused study and research abroad and expanding international perspectives.
Director Jiang emphasized that in addition to the Creative Technology and Purdue Dual Degree entrance scholarships, the Electrical Engineering Department's alumni have established the Cheng Dian Educational Foundation, offering NT$300,000 full-grade entrance scholarships and various level-specific scholarships post-enrollment, providing extensive financial support for students. Furthermore, the department's "Cheng Dian Backpacker Beyond the Wall Project" encourages students to step out of their comfort zones, challenge themselves, and develop independent living skills.
Since the inauguration of the third building of the Electrical Engineering Department in late 2022, the department has continuously improved its hardware facilities, providing a smart and high-quality teaching environment. This includes interactive tiered classrooms, Open Lab laboratories, and maker spaces, equipped with modern teaching tools, self-study platforms, and collaborative learning environments that foster proactive learning attitudes and significantly enhance employability competitiveness.
