"Redball Tainan Parallel Exhibition" by artist Kurt Perschke debuts at NCKU Future Venue on April 1st.
"Redball Tainan | Ripples in Historic Districts Curatorial Parallel Exhibition" will be showcased at the 2nd floor of the Future Venue, NCKU (NCKU) Sheng-Li Campus, from March 27th to April 10th. On April 1st, as part of the exhibition, American artist Kurt Perschke will be present at NCKU, inviting students and citizens alike to experience the charm of the Redball.
To help the audience better understand the artistic concept behind the Redball, the NCKU Museum and the Atelier Future jointly present the "Redball Tainan | Ripples in Historic Districts Curatorial Parallel Exhibition". This exhibition will start from the historic streets of Tainan, guiding the audience to explore the rivers and harbors closely related to the city's past, allowing them to appreciate the changes in Tainan's hydrology over 400 years.
The Tainan City Government held a press conference today (March 29) for the "Redball Tainan" exhibition. Tainan City Cultural Affairs Bureau Director Xie Shiyuan stated that showcasing Tainan's abundant cultural heritage is a key theme of Tainan 400. Through the Redball Tainan art initiative, they hope to enable more people to understand the core issues of Tainan 400 and explore Tainan's past and future in a unique way.
NCKU Assistant Vice President Ping-Sheng Wu, who currently serves as the director of the NCKU Museum, mentioned during the press conference that NCKU, as it approaches its centennial in 2031, has been inseparable from the development of the city and the nation since its establishment in 1931. The NCKU Museum has always adhered to the concept of "open to the city, enter the city", and in 2024, in conjunction with the Tainan 400, it is partnering with the Tainan Ching-Yeh Hotel to present the exhibition "17th Century Dutch Forts and Towns", a new attempt to deepen NCKU's close connection with Tainan. The NCKU Redball Parallel Exhibition will provide a complete narrative of the Redball Tainan initiative and the historical development of this city, inviting audiences from all walks of life to rediscover and explore Tainan.
The NCKU Redball Tainan Parallel Exhibition is significant and promising. In addition to presenting documentary materials related to Tainan's hydrology as supplementary historical context for "Redball Tainan", the exhibition's significance is further enhanced by its intersection with the Tainan Deqing Creek and Wenyuan Creek basins within the NCKU campus area. The opening ceremony of the parallel exhibition will be held at 11:00 am on April 1st. On that day, artist Kurt Perschke will conduct a one-day on-site creation at the NCKU Future Venue, bringing unlimited creativity and inspiration to the NCKU campus.
To provide audiences with a more comprehensive and enjoyable visiting experience, the NCKU Museum has organized the exhibition into four main sections. It is hoped that through this exhibition, the public can gain a better understanding of the connection between the Redball Tainan initiative and the city. The first section will focus on introducing the historic districts and ancient river systems, discussing the emergence of historic districts and their unique characteristics. The second and third sections will provide a comprehensive introduction to the Redball project's origins, exhibition locations, and the artist. The final section will feature interviews with curators, co-curators, and artists, allowing the public to gain a deeper understanding of the spirit and essence of the initiative.
The "Redball Project" is the world's longest-running street art initiative, initiated by American artist Kurt Perschke in 2001. It has toured more than 40 famous cities worldwide to date, bringing joy and happiness to each city where it exhibits only once. This special appearance in Tainan for Tainan 400 is different from its usual practice of exhibiting in different cities. During the exhibition, from late March to early April 2024, the Redball will move to a different location in Tainan every day for ten consecutive days, appearing at ten different historic districts, including Anping Old Fort, Jieguanting, NCKU Sheng-Li Campus Future Venue, and River Bliss Plaza, among others. It is hoped that the presence of the Redball will inspire audiences to imagine and anticipate the historic districts, and through this exhibition, deepen their understanding of Tainan's hydrological and landscape development over the past 400 years.
