Engineering and Computer Science at NCKU, Honored with the ''2023 19th International Outstanding Inventor Award.''
"Professor Pau-Choo Chung, a distinguished professor and the dean of the College of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at National Cheng Kung University (NCKU), is currently dedicated to the development of artificial intelligence pathology image analysis, applying research findings to medical image analysis and healthcare. Recognized for her outstanding performance, she was awarded the '2023 19th International Outstanding Inventor Award - International Academic Innovation Diamond Award' by the Taiwan International Invention Award Society, and was received by President Tsai Ing-wen. Her remarkable academic achievements in practical applications reflect the vision of NCKU, integrating knowledge, culture, and technological inventions for societal development, connecting with the future of the city, the nation, and common challenges.
On April 12th, the award recipients led by Chairman Wu Guojun of the Taiwan Innovation Invention Association, accompanied by Deputy Minister Zheng-Qi Chen of the Ministry of Economic Affairs, were received by the President at the Presidential Palace. President Ing-wen Tsai congratulated all the awardees for standing out in fierce competition and expressed expectations for them to continue upholding professionalism and enthusiasm, enjoying the joy of invention, and creating more achievements.
Professor Pau-Choo Chung's research areas include artificial neural networks, deep learning, intelligent computing, medical image analysis, and image pattern recognition. Her research performance is renowned both domestically and internationally. From 2012 to 2014, she served as the convener of the 'Intelligent Computing Discipline' at the Ministry of Science and Technology, and from 2016 to 2018, she served as the Director of the Information and Technology Education Division at the Ministry of Education. She has also served as the dean of the MinChuan Institute of Intelligence Computing at NCKU.
Professor Pau-Choo Chung collaborated with various hospitals, including the National Center for High-Performance Computing, NCKU Hospital, Kaohsiung Chang Gung Memorial Hospital, and Taichung Veterans General Hospital, to develop an 'open artificial intelligence pathology analysis platform with integrated collaborative cooperation,' jointly developing digital pathology AI analysis models to detect human tissue and lesion areas, calculate disease diagnosis-related quantitative indicators. Currently, models for liver tumor detection, liver fibrosis AI analysis technology, and liver lipid AI analysis have been developed, providing physicians with convenient integrated digital pathology image analysis services. She has also developed the world's first federated learning agent (FLAg) mechanism and collaborated with the National Institutes of Health (NIH) system in the United States, making her the first international partner in pathology image analysis for NIH.
Since 2008, Professor Pau-Choo Chung has been elected as a Fellow of the IEEE and is the founder of Women in CAS. She currently serves as the associate editor of IEEE Transactions on Artificial Intelligence and the Vice President for Education of IEEE CIS.
The 'Chinese Innovation and Invention Society' was established in 2009, the first non-profit organization in Taiwan focusing on innovative inventions. The '2023 19th International Outstanding Inventor Award' is jointly organized by the Taiwan International Invention Award Association and the Chinese Innovation Invention Association. The selection process is rigorous, covering invention patents, utility model patents, design patents, dissertation writings, domestic and international awards, as well as consideration of social welfare, to select the most representative international outstanding inventors of the year."
