Vietnam’s Can Tho University visits NCKU to promote cooperation in semiconductor and biomedicine

As the world ushers in the era of semiconductor chips, the Vietnamese government has included the semiconductor industry as one of the nation’s developmental priorities and designated 18 top Vietnamese universities to prepare and offer courses related to chip design and semiconductor. On July 16th, a delegation from Vietnam's Can Tho University (CTU), led by Rector Dr. Trung-Tinh Tran, visited National Cheng Kung University (NCKU), with the purpose in exchanging ideas and experiences in the talent cultivation in semiconductor area, AI accelerator and applied technology.
Accompanying was a delegation of Chen-Yung Memorial Foundation Inc. in Vietnam, led by CEO Mr. Wen-Chu Hsien. With a core value of enhancing exchanges and cooperation between Taiwan and Vietnam, the foundation was also one of the NCKU-Butterfly Program sponsors and supported Vietnamese students’ study in Taiwan.
NCKU’s Vice President for International Affairs, Chair Prof. Sun-Yuan Hsieh, mentioned that NCKU has a long-standing and strong relationship with Vietnam, and has signed academic agreements with 14 prestigious Vietnam universities since 2004, collaborating in multiple fields for joint research and mobility projects. For the past 5 years alone, NCKU has already had 385 co-authored publications with Vietnamese institutions and attracted nearly 1,000 Vietnam students for degree study and exchange. CTU is not only one of the 16 core universities deemed by Vietnam’s Ministry of Education and Training, but also an outstanding member of the ASEAN university network with close ties with over 200 academic and government units worldwide. The Chen-Yung Memorial Foundation, Inc. (VN), which has a special bond with NCKU, had sponsored 14 Vietnamese students through the NCKU-Butterfly Program, helping NCKU cultivate multinational talents. Through the meeting today, NCKU hopes to promote more academic exchanges between the two universities, and thereby benefit both countries.
Rector Trung-Tinh Tran of CTU mentioned in his remarks that, located in the Mekong Delta, Vietnam’s major rice-producing area, CTU has long been known for having the most advanced agricultural research institute in Vietnam. The purposes of visiting NCKU are not only to implement academic exchanges in the fields of IC design, semiconductors and AI, aiming to train local talents to support Vietnamese government’s goal of cultivating 50,000 semiconductor engineers by 2030, but also to create an opportunity for CTU to take a leaf out of NCKU’s book in biomedicine and healthcare expertise, as CTU is soon going to re-establish its own College of Medicine too. Rector Tran looks forward to deepening existing academic interaction between the two universities and promoting mutual progress in academia as well as in industry.
Dr. Van-Lam Le, CTU’s Director of International Relations Department, pointed out that CTU is a multidisciplinary university established in 1966. It has 16 colleges, 15 research centers and institutes, and is currently home for more than 44,500 students. In addition to its key role in research and education in Vietnam, it also acts as a transmitter of knowledge and technology in the country, actively moving towards internationalization in recent years through the implementation of more English-taught courses and exchanges with academic institutions from various countries.
Assoc. Prof. Chia-Hsiang Lin, Director of International Relations Division, gave an overview of NCKU’s past and current highlights of academic research. He also stated that NCKU has remarkable performances in supporting the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), as well as the academia-industry-government cooperation achievements with Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company Limited (TSMC), Taiwan Semiconductor Research Institute (TSRI), NCKU Hospital and leaders in various fields.
Chair Prof. Emeritus Yan-Kuin Su, Dean of Academy of Innovative Semiconductor and Sustainable Manufacturing (AISSM), provided a thorough overview of AISSM's attributes and capabilities, highlighting its five main degree programs, extensive industry resources, and business partnerships. He used current instances of industry-academia collaboration to illustrate the important duties that AISSM has in the areas of talent cultivation, research, and development in related domains. When sharing about the variety of international exchanges between AISSM and its global partners, Dean Su pointed out that Vietnam is the third-largest place of origin for international students at AISSM. He looks forward to seeing increased collaboration and exchanges between Taiwan and Vietnam.
During the meeting, representatives from the two universities also actively discussed about the recent development in the field of electrical engineering of the two universities and the potential cooperation models, such as faculty mobility, student exchange, dual-degree program, and corporate internships. Both parties had enjoyable and productive conversations. NCKU representatives in the meeting also included Distinguished Prof. Wei-Chou Hsu, Associate Dean of AISSM, Prof. Wei-Chih Lai, Chair, Department of Photonics, and Prof. Chun Hei Antonio Cheung, Director of Overseas Students and Scholars Services Division. The CTU delegation demonstrated its activeness and sincerity in fostering exchanges through visiting NCKU and several other noteworthy academic institutions and businesses. The Chen-Yung Memorial Foundation actively promoted and assisted interactions between Taiwan and Vietnam by acting as a communication link between the two countries.
