A delegation from Indonesia's Brawijaya University, led by former president Dr. Nuhfil Hanani, visited NCKU on July 30th. The 12-member delegation, comprised of professors from various departments, aimed to explore collaboration with NCKU in areas such as semiconductor courses and international student exchange program. The visit sought to deepen bilateral cooperation and ultimately strengthen ties between Taiwan and Indonesia, fostering an ongoing exchange of talent and knowledge.
During the meeting, NCKU's Vice President for International Affairs, Sun-Yuan Hsieh, suggested that Brawijaya University could send instructors to pursue doctoral degrees at NCKU, which would enhance research capacity on both sides. Hsieh also recommended that Brawijaya University send students to AISSM Semiconductor Summer School , offered by NCKU's Academy of Innovative Semiconductor and Sustainable Manufacturing (AISSM). Brawijaya University, a comprehensive institution with over 30,000 students, has been a key Indonesian partner of NCKU. In 2017, the Colleges of Engineering at both universities signed agreements for dual doctoral and master’s degree programs. Additionally, NCKU's College of Bioscience and Biotechnology established a college-level collaboration for a double master’s degree program in the same year. To further expand the partnership, the two universities signed a university-level Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in 2019. Although the MoU expired in January 2024, negotiations are currently underway to renew the agreement. Also, Brawijaya University expressed interest in establishing a university-level student exchange program with NCKU in 2023.

Dr. Didik Hartono, Director of International Office at Brawijaya University, not only presented the university's strengths and research priorities but also expressed their interest in the fields of semiconductors and artificial intelligence. One of the delegation members, Dr. Henny Rosalinda, also responded to the cooperation suggestions. Regarding student exchange, she mentioned that Brawijaya University is offering free exchange programs for international students this year and encouraged NCKU students to apply. However, she noted a major hurdle for faculty exchange, pointing out that Taiwanese universities tend to have high enrollment rates but lower graduation rates. Lastly, she inquired about the details of the AISSM Summer School program.

Chia-Hsiang Lin, Director of International Relations Division at NCKU's Office of International Affairs, introduced the university's recent academic research highlights and research centers , emphasizing NCKU's outstanding achievements in sustainable development, semiconductors, and industry-academia collaboration. Building on the current collaboration, Lin suggested that the two universities further expand their partnership to include areas such as food security and precision agriculture, which were strengths of Brawijaya University. Dr. Didik Hartono confirmed that food security was indeed one of the university's top research priorities.

Following the meeting, Nina Fu and Jasmine Li , from NCKU's Office of International Affairs, guided the delegation members on a tour of the campus and historical sites. At the delegation's request, Director Lin also arranged a visit to the Intelligent Hyperspectral Computing Laboratory  in NCKU's Department of Electrical Engineering, where both sides exchanged technical knowledge and opinions on the application of artificial intelligence and satellite technology in agriculture.

The visit was marked by enthusiastic discussions between NCKU scholars and the Indonesian delegation on potential collaborations. Topics ranged from student and faculty exchange programs, dual-degree programs, to the current state of affairs in agriculture and food security. The Brawijaya University delegation's journey to Taiwan demonstrated their genuine commitment to forging a meaningful partnership.
