The fourth cohort of the NCKU BS-Purdue MS Dual Degree Program students has just completed their summer study tour at Purdue University and had a fruitful journey in the USA.

The special summer study tour, part of NCKU BS-Purdue MS Dual Degree Program at Purdue University, has been running for three years. This year, Prof. Chih-Hsing Liu, Vice Chair of Mechanical Engineering, led 22 freshman students from NCKU departing for Purdue University on June 29th to participate in this intensive course jointly organized by the two universities.

The study tour, held from June 29th to July 14th, included the professional intensive course offered by Purdue University College of Engineering, Intercultural Competence Learning Activities, an English Elevator Pitch Workshop, and visits to the School of Aeronautics and Astronautics, the School of Biomedical Engineering, and the Purdue Honors College. The students not only experienced the learning environment of their future professions but also explored various possibilities for interdisciplinary collaboration.

To help students quickly acclimate to campus life at Purdue University and meet with the faculty of various departments, Purdue University organized a Welcome Reception on July 1st. Attending faculty included Prof. William Crossley, Uhrig & Vournas Head of Aeronautics and Astronautics; Prof. Gregory Blaisdell, Associate Head of Gambaro Graduate Program of Aeronautics and Astronautics; Prof. Eckhard Groll, William E. and Florence E. Perry Head of Mechanical Engineering, and Reilly; Prof. Beth Hess, Assistant Head of Undergraduate Student Well-Being of Mechanical Engineering; Prof. Jun Chen, Assistant Head for Facilities and Operations of Mechanical Engineering; Prof. Chih-Chun Wang, newly appointed Associate Head of the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering; Advisor Ms. Xiaomin Qian and Ms. LouAnna Eichrodt from Mechanical Engineering; and Advisor Ms. Angela Rainwater from Electrical and Computer Engineering. The Purdue faculty generously shared their expertise in their research fields and provided advice on planning for graduate studies. The interaction between the faculty and students from both universities was lively and enthusiastic.

The intensive course also connected the NCKU Alumni and other Taiwanese students from the Purdue Taiwanese Graduate Student Association (I Love Taiwan Club, ILTC). The graduate students shared many experiences and suggestions for studying and living in the USA. Prof. Tom Shih, one of the NCKU’s distinguished alumni and former Head of Aeronautics and Astronautics at Purdue University, even invited all the members of this trip to his house for lunch. Prof. Tom Shih treated the students hospitably and shared his precious experiences, encouraging them to take challenges and explore the unknown.

In addition to the academic schedule, the students also enjoyed the baseball game on Independence Day (July 4th), the extracurricular activities with other international students, and the city tours to Indianapolis, Lafayette, and Chicago, allowing them to experience the American culture and life.  Some students further flighted to New York and California after the course ended.

The NCKU BS-Purdue MS Dual Degree Program, also known as the NCKU–Purdue 3+1+1 program, has been making exciting progress since 2020. Students admitted to this program study at NCKU for the first three years and then go to Purdue for their fourth year (the first "+1"). After receiving their bachelor's degree from NCKU and being admitted to Purdue, the students begin the master's program at Purdue,  with a good chance of earning the master's degree in one year (the second "+1").

Currently, the main collaborations are between Mechanical Engineering, NCKU – Aeronautics and Astronautics, Purdue; Mechanical Engineering, NCKU – Mechanical Engineering, Purdue; Electrical Engineering, NCKU – Electrical and Computer Engineering, Purdue; and Computer Science and Information Engineering, NCKU – Electrical and Computer Engineering, Purdue. Students may join this program through the Individual Application or the Advanced Subjects Test in Taiwan. This program is a challenging but rewarding option to study abroad and pursue an extraordinary international education.
