SDG13
Promoting sustainable carbon reduction, NCKU organized the "Carbon Reduction Management Knowledge Training for R&D Personnel"
Climate change is no longer a distant future issue; it is rapidly and profoundly affecting our lives and environment. Greenhouse gas emissions, a major contributor to climate change, represent a critical global challenge. Therefore, effectively monitoring, analyzing, and managing greenhouse gas emissions to develop and implement carbon reduction strategies has become an urgent priority for safeguarding our planet.
To address this, National Cheng Kung University’s (NCKU) Office of Research and Development held a four-day, 24-hour training course on greenhouse gas inventory from August 5 to 8. This course, featuring expert instructors from the Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI) and SGS, a third-party certification body accredited by the Environmental Protection Administration (EPA), will provide intensive training to 25 participants according to the ISO 14064-1:2018 standard.
Chuan-Pu Liu, Director of the Office of R&D at NCKU, stated that with the escalating severity of global warming and climate change, greenhouse gas emissions have become one of the major challenges we face. As a member of NCKU, our mission is to contribute to global climate protection through innovative technologies and smart solutions for effectively monitoring, analyzing, and managing greenhouse gas emissions. NCKU is committed to net-zero sustainability research. In April this year, we inaugurated Taiwan’s first "Carbon Neutral Hub." Moving forward, NCKU will collaborate with government, industry, and academic partners to cultivate net-zero sustainability talent and technology and promote national green transformation.
The course content includes "Trends in International Greenhouse Gas Issues," "Explanation of Taiwan's Greenhouse Gas Management System and Development," "In-depth Analysis of ISO 14064-1:2018 Standards," "Techniques for Defining the Boundaries of Greenhouse Gas Inventory Processes and Reporting," "Teaching and Case Studies on Quantifying Greenhouse Gas Emissions," "Verification Planning," "Explanation of Verification Processes and Key Points," and "Case Studies on the Verification of Greenhouse Gas Inventories and Reports." Participants who complete the course will receive the "ISO 14064-1:2018 Lead Verifier for Greenhouse Gas Inventory Standards" certification issued by an EPA-accredited institution. This certification will enable them to contribute to carbon reduction initiatives and support the university's efforts toward net-zero sustainability.
In response to the government's ambitious target for net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050, NCKU will continue to conduct educational programs for R&D management personnel to enhance their carbon reduction knowledge. This ongoing commitment to sustainability governance will provide specialized training on carbon management, focusing on greenhouse gas trends, management systems, and verification processes. The aim is to guide relevant units in planning energy-saving and carbon reduction strategies to achieve collective carbon reduction goals.
