President Meng-Ru Shen visited Malaysia to meet with alumni and received a warm welcome from the Penang Alumni Association
National Cheng Kung University (NCKU) President Meng-Ru Shen visited Penang, Malaysia, on September 12, where he met with alumni. He expressed that the university’s alumni are spread across the globe, demonstrating strong unity and passion for their alma mater during every gathering.
During his trip, President Shen visited ACKU Metal Industries (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd. In the 1980s, the Malaysian Chinese community called for collective investment for industrial development, and the NCKU Alumni Association responded by forming a business organization to pool alumni resources for investment, leading to the establishment of NCKU Holdings.
In the evening, President Shen dined with several alumni, including Malaysian Cheng Kung University Alumni Association President Wen-Han Chen (Civil Engineering ’84) and Vice Presidents Jian-Rong Wang (Materials ’92), Ke-Huan Lin (Chemical Engineering ’60), and others.
In his speech, President Shen noted his impression of the ACKU Metal Company, which has expanded from industrial to land development. He highlighted the alumni’s Phoenix Fund, which invests in startups founded by fellow alumni. He emphasized the importance of alumni understanding the development of their alma mater through such visits.
The Director of the Alumni Center, Wei-Cheng Lo, reported on the university’s current status and fundraising goals. NCKU's nine colleges, along with the Miin Wu School of Computing, Institute of Smart Semiconductor, and Institute of Sustainable Manufacturing, currently reflect a ratio of 48:52 between graduate and undergraduate programs, showcasing the university's commitment to academic excellence. He expressed hope for alumni support in various areas, including interdisciplinary research, attracting international talent, and enhancing student well-being, as NCKU approaches its centennial anniversary.
