The 113th "Grand Review PhD and Postdoctoral Research Academic Competition" and "UR University Student Poster Competition"
To encourage outstanding doctoral students and postdoctoral researchers with research potential to actively engage in innovative research and publish high-quality academic works, National Cheng Kung University (NCKU) held the 2024 Grand Review Doctoral and Postdoctoral Research Academic Competition poster award ceremony on the 5th at the Macronix Hall, NCKU's Sheng-Li Campus. This year, the competition was part of the university’s anniversary celebration week, making the award ceremony even more exciting. For the first time, the award ceremony was combined with the UR (Undergraduate Research) Poster Competition for university students.
In his speech, Dr. Chuan-Pu Liu, Director of Research and Development, explained that most students focus solely on their own research fields, with limited knowledge of other disciplines. The aim of the Grand Review Doctoral and Postdoctoral Research Academic Competition is not only to showcase individual research results but also to encourage cross-disciplinary sharing and exchanges, which will spark and inspire more innovative ideas, enhancing the quality of research. He also hoped that this event would give undergraduates a chance to observe the outstanding research by NCKU’s doctoral and postdoctoral students, boosting their academic confidence and motivating them to continue their studies at NCKU, one of the best research universities in Taiwan. Dr. Liu emphasized that the event was not only about rewarding winners with prizes but also about playing a role in fostering and catalyzing students' future research careers.
The goal of this event is to encourage doctoral students and postdoctoral researchers at NCKU to engage in innovative research, using the poster competition as a platform to showcase high-quality academic work and research outcomes. This encourages academic and industry collaboration, regardless of whether students choose to continue their careers in academia or transition to industry. The event aims to break conventional views on degrees, enhance professional capabilities, and maintain a balance in the supply and demand of high-level talent within Taiwan, allowing more professionally trained doctoral personnel to contribute to the industry and consider paths outside academia, helping to sustain the balanced development of various domestic industries. In addition to strong academic training, the event also promotes the development of cross-disciplinary skills.
Since its inception in 2021, the Grand Review Doctoral and Postdoctoral Research Academic Competition has involved initial screenings, followed by recommendations from each college, and reviews conducted by relevant field experts. This year, a total of 68 entries were received (56 doctoral students and 12 postdoctoral researchers). After evaluation, 4 postdoctoral researchers won the Outstanding Award, 5 received the Excellence Award, 15 doctoral students won the Outstanding Award, and 27 received the Excellence Award.
This event, which coincided with the university’s anniversary week, made the competition more exciting. The award ceremony was held together with the UR (Undergraduate Research) Poster Competition, whose winners were announced in September. The Grand Review Doctoral and Postdoctoral Research Academic Competition award list will soon be posted on the Research and Development Office’s website and shared with the university departments to assist in publicizing the results.
