National Cheng Kung University (NCKU) Energy Industry Talent Education Center held a signing ceremony on March 27th at the Department of Aeronautics and Astronautics to promote sustainable energy education from the ground up. The event, titled "Sustainable Energy and Career Exploration Course," brought together principals and directors from 11 high schools in Tainan and Kaohsiung, marking a new milestone in building energy literacy and career education through collaboration between higher and secondary education.

The event was hosted by Professor Wei-Hsin Chen, Director of the NCKU Energy Industry Talent Education Center. He emphasized that the demand for green energy talents in Taiwan is rapidly increasing. While the Environmental Protection Administration collaborates with 28 universities to establish a training alliance, the Center actively responds to national sustainable policies, positioning itself as a pioneer in linking high school education and promoting energy literacy. The curriculum, introduced as part of this initiative, consists of 3 modules: an 18-week sustainable energy course, an 18-week career exploration course, and a combination of 9-week courses. By incorporating professional university resources, the program helps students build an understanding of energy policies and plan their academic and career paths from the high school level. Professor Chen highlighted that the program aligns with the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goal 4, which aims to ensure inclusive, equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities. The Center plans to assign master's and doctoral-level instructors to schools, promoting cross-school sharing of teaching resources.

Shou-Lei Li, Chairperson of the Chinese Consciousness Education and Care Association, shared the concept of "consciousness literacy education," stressing the importance of non-cognitive skills such as self-awareness, emotional regulation, and interpersonal connections. The curriculum combines psychology and educational theory to help students explore their potential and develop a sense of direction. Using industry-developed career exploration modules, the program offers personalized learning recommendations through holistic assessment and interest analysis, thereby enhancing students' career decision-making abilities.

Several high school principals expressed high expectations for this collaboration. Wen-Yi Cheng, Principal of Kaohsiung Municipal Kaohsiung Girls' Senior High School, stated that early exposure to sustainable energy courses would help students develop a comprehensive understanding of energy policies and scientific literacy. The school plans to collaborate with the Center starting in the 2025 academic year. Tzu-Huang Huang, Principal of Tainan Municipal Shalun International Senior High School, noted that as a comprehensive K-12 school, Shalun may consider offering fully English-taught courses to align with global standards, enhancing students' language and scientific competencies. Chun-Fu Liu, Principal of Kang Ming Senior High School, shared that students who participated in the Center's clean energy courses and national energy competitions gained valuable experience and notable achievements. Integrating university and high school teaching methods and evaluation mechanisms will help students better understand their learning processes and future aspirations.

The signing ceremony involved a strong lineup of schools, including National Tainan First Senior High School, Tainan Private Deguang Catholic High School, Tainan Municipal Shalun International Senior High School, Kang Ming Senior High School, National Shan-Hua Senior High School, National Tainan Second Senior High School, Kaohsiung Municipal Kaohsiung Senior High School, Kaohsiung Municipal Kaohsiung Girls' Senior High School, National Feng-Shan Senior High School, Kaohsiung Municipal Cianjhen Senior High School, and Kaohsiung Municipal Fu Cheng Senior High School. This demonstrates the high level of attention and active participation of high schools in promoting competency-based courses.

In recent years, the NCKU Energy Industry Talent Education Center has actively extended sustainable energy education to high schools by offering clean energy knowledge courses and science activities. Additionally, through "One-Day University Life Activities" and "Energy Micro-Courses," the Center has nurtured students' interest in energy science and competition skills, leading to outstanding performances in national energy competitions. This course agreement not only continues these achievements but also deepens the long-term collaboration with high schools, embodying the Ministry of Education's 2019 Curriculum Guidelines of "Autonomy, Interaction, and Mutual Benefit." In the future, the Center will flexibly adjust teaching models and semester arrangements based on each school's conditions and work with teachers to design tailored educational content. This initiative aims to create an effective learning environment where students can develop self-awareness, enhance competencies, and shape their aspirations, preparing them for the future with a strong foundation. This collaboration signifies NCKU's commitment not only to higher education talent cultivation but also to fulfilling its social responsibility by nurturing the next generation of energy citizens with scientific literacy and civic responsibility from the ground up.
