NCKU Legal Service Society Launches Campus Service Stations to Provide Professional Legal Consultation to Students
National Cheng Kung University (NCKU) President, Meng-Ru Shen, adheres to the school philosophy of "students first, caring for society, and striving for excellence." He is actively building a "safe campus" and a "happy campus" with a friendly campus environment. The "Legal Service Society," founded by the College of Social Sciences and the Department of Law, is putting this philosophy into practice by addressing the legal needs of faculty, staff, and students. In addition to providing legal consultation services on the first floor of the College of Social Sciences, the society has launched a campus tour service starting December 9, 2024, to provide legal assistance to NCKU students and staff and help resolve legal difficulties, further advancing President Shen's mission of creating a "happy and tangible campus."
Dean of Student Affairs, Liang-Yi Hung, mentioned that the Legal Service Society has been providing legal assistance for 26 years. In addition to offering on-campus support, the society also extends its services to local government offices in northern Tainan. More service locations will be established in the future. The society’s voluntary professional services are a valuable contribution, which the president highly supports and appreciates. Dean Hong also emphasized that students are the core of the university, and therefore, the number of on-campus legal consultation locations will gradually increase. In addition to the dormitories, services will be expanded to include military training rooms and activity centers to better serve students.
Professor Yi-Tien Lin, faculty advisor for the Legal Service Society, pointed out that students mainly seek legal advice on traffic accidents, involvement in fraud and money laundering, and various consumer disputes. Recently, fraud and money laundering cases have become the dominant legal consultation issues. In response to the increasing demand for fraud-related consultations, especially when students unknowingly get involved in fraud and money laundering, the society feels the importance of providing such services. The society hopes to bring legal consultations closer to every corner of the campus, allowing students in need to know that they are not alone and that there are channels to seek help. This is also in line with President Shen's vision of creating a "happy campus" and "safe campus," fulfilling the university's social responsibility and local engagement.
A student who had received assistance previously shared during the first stop of the campus tour service that the Legal Service Society had actively assisted with claims and documentation preparation during a traffic accident and expressed gratitude for the support. Alumni lawyer representatives Sheng-Qi Zhou and Cheng-Hong Ouyang expressed that being able to participate in providing voluntary assistance through the Legal Service Society and giving back to their alma mater is a precious opportunity. They hope to assist more local residents and work toward building a better environment in the future.
The NCKU Legal Service Society, formed by NCKU law students (undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral students) and alumni volunteer lawyers, was established on March 5, 1998, under the leadership of former President Zheng-Yi Weng. For 26 years, the society has been committed to providing legal consultation services on campus, assisting students and staff with private legal matters. The society is advised by faculty members and volunteer lawyers, and is overseen by the Legal Service Committee of the Department of Law, supporting the legal needs of all faculty, staff, and students.
The launch event today was successfully concluded, with the presence of the Dean of the College of Social Sciences, Chun-Li Tsai, the Director of the Department of Law, Hsiao-Wen Wang, and the Deputy Dean of Student Affairs and Faculty member Wan-Ju Yeh, who expressed their support for the Legal Service Society's campus tour legal services. Moving forward, the tour will continue, with the Legal Service Society and alumni volunteer lawyers providing legal consultations to students in need. The service will be held regularly at military training rooms, student activity centers, and the Guangfu I Dormitory consultation room. Students unable to attend the tour service can also receive legal consultations at the NCKU Legal Service Society located on the first floor of the College of Social Sciences in the Li Xing Campus.
