NCKU Launches EV Charging Station for Blood Donation Bus, Marking a Milestone in Public Welfare and Green Energy
National Cheng Kung University (NCKU) is recognized as one of the most passionate universities in Taiwan, consistently ranking high in blood donation. This year, NCKU has further embraced the green energy and environmental protection policies by joining the Kaohsiung Blood Donation Center's "Eco-Friendly Blood Donation Bus Program." The university installed an electric vehicle charging station in front of the Yun-Ping Administration Building at the Kuang-Fu Campus, reducing emissions and making campus blood donations not only a public welfare activity but also more environmentally friendly. The charging station inauguration ceremony took place on March 18, with NCKU Executive Vice President Ching-Chang Lee, Kaohsiung Blood Donation Center Director Qi-min Hong , and several officials and student organizations witnessing the event together.
Executive Vice President Ching-Chang Lee emphasized that education is not only about imparting knowledge but also about nurturing a sense of social responsibility in students. Through organizing blood donation drives on campus, the university instills the spirit of helping others into everyday life. He also mentioned that the future is the era of green energy. Last year, NCKU began implementing air quality maintenance in the campus and promoted the concept of net-zero carbon emissions, aiming to create a more eco-friendly campus environment.
Director of Student Affairs, Liang-Yi Hung, also expressed the importance of the blood donation activity, emphasizing that the collaboration between the Office of Student Affairs and students is essential, with the blood donation drive being part of the university's social responsibility. Director of General Affairs, Jian-Hong Wu, affirmed the installation of the charging station, highlighting the department's ongoing commitment to creating a friendly and sustainable campus environment. He thanked the Blood Donation Center for their support in updating the electrical equipment, as both parties work together to promote green energy and public welfare. Student Council President Chen-Hong Wu mentioned that the Student Council has always valued public welfare activities and is happy to collaborate with the university and the Blood Donation Center for this event. The electric blood donation bus significantly reduces the noise from the previous diesel generators, creating a better environment for volunteers and students waiting to donate.
The Office of Student Affairs of NCKU noted that in the past, traditional diesel blood donation buses operated on campus, causing concerns over emissions and environmental impact. With the installation of the charging station, the blood donation buses now operate on electricity, reducing the use of diesel generators and lowering carbon emissions. This initiative demonstrates NCKU's commitment to social responsibility (USR) and serves as an excellent example of sustainable development.
The spirit of blood donation is deeply ingrained at NCKU, with student organizations planning diverse and distinctive blood donation activities every semester. In 2024, 2,177 faculty and students donated a total of 2,677 bags of blood, with 504 first-time donors, accounting for 23% of the participants.
This semester's first blood donation drive was organized by the Medical Department's student association, in conjunction with the Medical Week event titled "You're My Little Sweetheart." The drive took place from March 18 to 20, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., at Yun-Ping Plaza. Donors received a specially designed "NCKU Simple Storage Bag," while first-time donors received an exclusive "Donation Center x NCKU Co-branded Diatomaceous Coaster." The Blood Donation Center and the student association also prepared various commemorative gifts. All faculty, students, and community members were encouraged to participate and support the public welfare initiative. Additional blood donation events are scheduled, with details available on the NCKU Office of Student Affairs Facebook page.
