NCKU collaborates with New Zealand's Geological and Nuclear Sciences Institute for geothermal energy projects.
The cooperation ceremony, hosted by Chun Hei Antonio Cheung, head of the Division of International Students and Scholars Affairs at NCKU, began with gratitude from NCKU for GNS's support and the initiation of a new chapter of cooperation. Professor Bieng-Zih Hsieh, director of the NCKU Geothermal Center, emphasized the center's expertise in geothermal energy development in Taiwan and the need for international experience to achieve the goal of accelerating Taiwan's geothermal resource development. GNS, renowned for its expertise in geothermal resource exploration and development, was seen as an ideal partner to provide technical and advisory services, aiding in the sustainable development of Taiwan's geothermal energy.
Tina Wilson expressed appreciation for the partnership between NCKU and GNS, foreseeing mutual benefits and enhanced educational and academic exchanges between Taiwan and New Zealand under the existing Free Trade Agreement framework. Mark Gibson, Business Manager of GNS, regarded the agreement as the first step in a long-term collaboration, thanking NCKU for recognizing GNS as an excellent partner in the international geothermal field. He pledged GNS's commitment to sharing its 70 years of experience in geothermal and energy fields and supporting the growth of both NCKU and New Zealand's younger generations.
Upon agreement on the terms of cooperation, both parties will expedite formal signing. Within this framework, they will immediately launch a project focusing on simulating geothermal reservoirs and managing geothermal injection in Taiwan. Additionally, a joint technical team will provide consultancy services for geothermal projects guided by the NCKU Geothermal Center, aiming to accelerate the development of Taiwan's geothermal energy resources.
The collaboration between NCKU and GNS aims to offer comprehensive technical and advisory services to Taiwan's geothermal development sector, assisting developers in addressing risks, environmental concerns, and ensuring sustainable resource management, thereby hastening the sustainable development of geothermal energy in Taiwan.
NCKU and the Institute of Geological and Nuclear Sciences of New Zealand initiated collaboration, conducting academic seminars and discussions on cooperation intentions on the 22nd at NCKU. Tina Wilson, Trade Commissioner of the New Zealand Commerce and Industry Office Trade Division (fourth from the left), attended the event to witness the occasion.
Both parties signed a memorandum of understanding for cooperation and will initiate project plans for Taiwan's geothermal resource simulation and reservoir management within this framework.
