On May 28, 2025, a delegation from Mapúa University, led by Dr. Bonifacio T. Doma, Executive Vice President for Global Alliance Partnership, visited National Cheng Kung University (NCKU) to discuss potential collaborations in the field of medicine and to tour the Institute of Molecular Medicine.
 
In his welcome remarks, Chair Professor Sun-Yuan Hsieh, Vice President for International Affairs, NCKU, highlighted the history of cooperation between the two institutions. NCKU’s College of Engineering and Institute of Sustainable Environment have both signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Mapúa University. From 2019 to 2024, the co-publications between NCKU and Mapúa University have focused on environmental science, chemistry, and earth sciences. Chair Professor Hsieh also noted that Mapúa University is a member of the Presidents' Forum of Southeast and South Asia and Taiwan Universities (SATU Presidents' Forum), and its President, Dr. Dodjie Maestrecampo, attended the 2025 SATU General Assembly in March, an honor for NCKU.


Executive Vice President Bonifacio T. Doma remarked that 2025 marks Mapúa University’s centennial. Traditionally focused on engineering and technology, Mapúa has collaborated with NCKU’s College of Engineering on short-term research mobility of scholars and doctoral training programs. With the recent establishment of its College of Health Sciences and College of Medicine, Mapúa hopes to expand cooperation with NCKU in medical and healthcare fields.
 
Professor Chun Hei Antonio Cheung from NCKU’s College of Medicine introduced the college’s programs, highlighting international talent cultivation initiatives such as summer schools, international public health, and international nursing programs. Dr. Lemmuel L. Tayo, Dean of the College of Health Sciences, and Dr. Malaya Santos, Dean of the College of Medicine at Mapúa, each presented their respective colleges’ academic plans and features. Both sides engaged in lively discussions on promoting student exchanges, academic visits, and research collaboration, mentioning resources such as the Taiwan Experience Education Program (TEEP), International Internship Pilot Program (IIPP), and National Science and Technology Council (NSTC) recruitment program.


The Mapúa University delegation included Dr. Bonifacio T. Doma, Jr., Executive Vice President for International Alliances; Dr. Delia B. Senoro, Assistant Vice President for International Linkages, Relations and Development Cooperation; Dr. Lemmuel L. Tayo, Dean of the School of Health Sciences, and Dr. Malaya Santos, Dean of the School of Medicine.
 
NCKU representatives included Chair Prof. Sun-Yuan Hsieh, Vice President for International Affairs; Professor Chun Hei Antonio Cheung, Vice Convener of the International Affairs Committee of College of Medicine. Prof. Li-Wha Wu, Chair of Institute of Molecular Medicine, and Prof. H. Sunny Sun introduced the Institute’s laboratories during the visit.
 
Mapúa University is a private research university located in Metro Manila. Established in 1925, it was upgraded from an institute of technology to a university in 2017. The university has 10 colleges and approximately 8,500 students. From 2019 to 2024, its academic output has focused mainly on computer science, engineering, decision science, and mathematics.
