Advancing Sleep Scoring Technology: Breaking Regional Barriers — “Intelligence PSG Scoring Training Workshop”
In today’s fast-paced society filled with constant stress, sleep disorders have become a critical health issue across all age groups. According to statistics from the Taiwan Society of Sleep Medicine, approximately one-fourth of Taiwan’s population suffers from sleep-related problems, significantly impacting health, productivity, and overall quality of life.
The Intelligence PSG Scoring Training Workshop was initially launched during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic and was conducted entirely online. Although the format later transitioned to in-person instruction, the difficulty and time required for travel led organizers to return to online delivery this year. Professor Sheng-Fu Liang, Director of the Center for Digital Biotech and Medical Innovation at NCKU, emphasized that the workshop aims to leverage cloud and digital technologies to internationalize sleep scoring training, providing equitable learning opportunities regardless of region or resource disparity.
This year’s workshop opened with a welcome speech delivered online by Dr. Li-Bang Chuang, President of the Taiwan Society of Sleep Medicine. Following this, Dr. Po-Ming Wu from the Department of Pediatric Neurology at NCKU Hospital gave an insightful presentation on REM sleep-related disorders, drawing from his rich clinical experience. Senior board member Dr. Sheng-Yi Liu delivered a lecture on the accurate interpretation of sleep graphs. The final speaker, Dr. Yu-Chieh Lin, a sleep technologist from the Sleep Medicine Center at Taichung Tzu Chi Hospital, gave a highly practical demonstration focused on the overnight polysomnographic features of narcolepsy patients. His session integrated the pathophysiological background with real-world clinical interpretation, offering substantial value to participants.
The panel discussion was moderated by Dr. Tsung-Hua Lu from the Department of Psychiatry at NCKU Hospital, Professor Sheng-Fu Liang from the Department of Computer Science and Information Engineering at NCKU, and Dr. Sheng-Yi Liu. They were joined by Taiwan Society of Sleep Medicine board members Dr. Chun-Sen Huang and Dr. Chun-Hsien Tseng, along with sleep technologist Wen-Kuei Lin from the Sleep Medicine Center at NCKU Hospital. The discussion explored the workshop’s central topics in depth, and the online audience actively posed questions and participated in a lively exchange, bringing the event to a successful conclusion.
It is worth noting that each year’s Intelligence PSG Scoring Training Workshop is developed and hosted in collaboration with a different professional sleep center, which takes the lead on topic design and theme selection. This year introduced new instructional content, including the RWA event annotation function and RWAI calculation, as well as extended discussions on the application of Multiple Sleep Latency Testing (MSLT), all integrated into a cloud-based sleep scoring platform—demonstrating the practical implementation of smart technologies in sleep medicine.
Through the workshop’s ongoing development and annual updates, it continues to enhance the professional capabilities of sleep technologists and create a platform for knowledge exchange. This not only strengthens clinical scoring skills but also serves as a reference framework for technician training and evaluation across Taiwan’s sleep centers. Looking to the future, the program aims to sustain the advancement of sleep medicine, amplify the voices of sleep technologists, and support the long-term growth and sustainability of Taiwan’s sleep health ecosystem.

The 5th Intelligence PSG Scoring Training Workshop was successfully held on June 21.

To promote equal learning opportunities, this year’s workshop was once again livestreamed online. The event was opened with a virtual welcome speech by Dr. Li-Bang Chuang (left in photo), President of the Taiwan Society of Sleep Medicine, marking the official start of the program.

Dr. Po-Ming Wu from the Department of Pediatric Neurology at NCKU Hospital delivered an insightful presentation on “REM Sleep-Related Disorders,” drawing from his extensive clinical experience.

Dr. Sheng-Yi Liu, a senior board member of the Taiwan Society of Sleep Medicine, gave a lecture on “Accurate Interpretation of Sleep Graphs.”

Dr. Yu-Chieh Lin, a sleep technologist from the Sleep Medicine Center at Taichung Tzu Chi Hospital, concluded the workshop with an engaging presentation on “Overnight Polysomnographic Features in Patients with Narcolepsy.” His session featured a compelling demonstration that bridged pathophysiology with clinical interpretation and practical teaching.

Dr. Cheng-Yo Lin, Director of the Sleep Medicine Center at NCKU Hospital, provided in-depth analysis during the panel discussion session. Both onsite and online participants actively engaged in vibrant exchanges. The workshop aspires to continue advancing professional development in sleep medicine and to collectively promote the overall growth and sustainable development of sleep health in Taiwan.
