The E-Champ NCKU Badminton Open Kicks Off, Featuring National Players Chien-Wei Chiang and Hsuan-Yi Wu at the Opening Ceremony
NCKU Dean of Academic Affairs, Prof. Sheng-Chih Shen, extended heartfelt thanks to alumni across Taiwan for their long-standing support, which has enabled the tournament to grow in scale year after year. He also expressed sincere appreciation to the generous sponsors and wished all participants an enjoyable and successful tournament experience.
Chairman Cheng-Kun Wang of E-Champ Aesthetic Medical Group, a proud sponsor for three consecutive years, emphasized that badminton is not only a sport of competition but also a lifelong activity suitable for all ages. He acknowledged the rise of many young Taiwanese players on the international stage and encouraged all participants to challenge themselves and strive for excellence, with the hope that one day they may stand at the pinnacle of global badminton. He also congratulated the NCKU badminton team on their recent double championship victory (men’s and women’s team events) in the University Games — a feat that highlights their impressive capabilities.
NCKU Global Alumni Association Vice President Shun-Tian Chiang noted the participation of many alumni teams from northern, central, and southern Taiwan, creating a vibrant and friendly competitive atmosphere. This year, the tournament introduced additional awards and prize money for the second and third place team winners in the group events.
Guest stars, Taiwan’s rising men’s doubles duo Chien-Wei Chiang and Hsuan-Yi Wu, not only performed the ceremonial serve but also competed in friendly matches with NCKU’s varsity team. They extended their best wishes to all players, encouraging everyone to enjoy the competition and strive for their personal best.
Sung-Pao Chien, Deputy Secretary-General of the Global Alumni Association and former president of the Taichung Alumni Association, remarked that the Alumni Team Division, introduced last year, has been warmly welcomed by alumni nationwide. Many found the competition to be both enjoyable and energizing. This year’s face-off between alumni and EMBA students is expected to further deepen school ties. “Hopefully one day,” he said humorously, “we’ll fill the entire court with NCKU alumni!”
Student Cheng-Ying Tsai, a freshman in Cross College Elite Program, started playing badminton in kindergarten and joined the school team by the second grade. He once achieved a four-time consecutive win in youth divisions, and placed top 8 in the National High School Games. Though retired from competitive school training, this is his first time participating in the NCKU Open, aiming to regain his tournament rhythm and capture the Men’s Doubles Open title. Reflecting on his journey, he shared: “Badminton taught me that the shuttle is round — anything can happen on court. Many dream of soaring to the top instantly, but true skill is built step by step.” Admiring retired Indonesian player Kevin Sanjaya Sukamuljo, he believes that a relaxed and authentic mindset allows players to unleash their full potential.
Student Hsin-Yu Peng, a junior in Electrical Engineering, discovered his love for badminton during a summer camp in elementary school and has been playing for 12 years. A former County Cup champion and National Intercollegiate Athletic Games winner, he now trains with consistency and passion. “Badminton is inseparable from my life. It has been with me every step of the way. To all players — don’t forget why you started. Play because it makes you happy!” He hopes the NCKU team will continue its momentum from the recent National Intercollegiate Athletic Games and achieve great results in this tournament.
This year’s tournament theme, “Smash and Shine”, symbolizes the spirit of each player becoming a shining star on the court — bold, fearless, and free to shine. The organizing committee warmly invites badminton lovers from across Taiwan to attend the matches and cheer on the athletes in action.
