Held for 22 consecutive years, the NCKU Library’s beloved used book charity sale opened at noon on September 15 to an enthusiastic crowd. Unlike previous years, when the event took place on the Main Library’s first floor, this year’s sale moved to the Basement Level 1 Art Gallery—yet even before the doors opened, the area was already packed with eager book lovers waiting to browse. As soon as the sale began, many sharp-eyed visitors quickly scooped up stacks of books and headed straight to the checkout, delighted to uncover knowledge-rich treasures while supporting a charitable cause. The lively atmosphere reflected both the community’s passion for reading and its commitment to giving back.
NCKU Library Director Tzu-Fun Fu noted that the sale embodies the library’s guiding theme of “cherishing the past, treasuring the present, and looking to the future.” She thanked more than 500 generous donors and the library staff who spent the past three months sorting and organizing materials, helping to make this year’s event the most successful yet in both the number of donors and the volume of books collected. Director Fu also expressed appreciation to the St. Theresa Opportunity Center, which has served people with developmental and physical disabilities since 1988 and will receive all proceeds from this year’s sale.
St. Theresa Opportunity Center Director Mei-Hua Yang highlighted the center’s 12 service locations and thanked NCKU and the many book lovers whose support enables the center to continue its mission of compassion and empowerment.
For 22 years, the NCKU Library has remained true to its founding principles of respecting intellectual property and valuing resources while organizing the annual used book charity sale. The event not only offers book lovers an excellent chance to discover hidden gems but also serves as a meaningful way to give back to society. Over the past 21 years, the NCKU Library Used Book Charity Sale has collected more than 130,000 donated books and raised nearly NT$3.6 million, all of which has been donated to social welfare organizations.
All proceeds from this year’s charity sale will be donated to the St. Theresa Opportunity Center. Founded in 1988 by Father Hui-Chung Gan, with American nun Sister Margaret as its first director, the center was the first daytime care facility in Tainan County dedicated to serving people with physical and developmental disabilities. Located in the more remote Yujing mountain area, St. Theresa Opportunity Center upholds a spirit of humility, courage, and perseverance. Guided by the principles of respect, support, self-determination, and inclusion, it provides loving care for children with developmental delays, individuals with disabilities, high-needs families, and elderly people living alone.

Starting at noon on September 15, the NCKU Main Library’s Basement Level 1 quickly filled with book lovers eager to browse and select from the nearly 20,000 volumes available at the 2025 Used Book Charity Sale.
