Registration Open for NCKU 114 Gender Film Festival and Post-Screening Discussions × Taiwan Girls’ Day Series Events
National Cheng Kung University (NCKU) is now accepting registrations for four sessions of the “114th NCKU Gender Film Festival and Post-Screening Discussions × Taiwan Girls’ Day” series. The first session will be held next Tuesday, October 28, at the International Conference Hall, Lecture Room 1, B1, Student Activity Center, Guangfu Campus. This year, the festival collaborates once again with the Taiwan Women’s Film Association, screening four selected films from Australia, Malaysia, Indonesia, Taiwan, the United States, and Armenia, inviting audiences to explore diverse perspectives on gender issues. Admission is free, and the event has applied for general education credits. Participants are encouraged to register online in advance and arrive early on the day of the event to secure a seat.
The event is funded by the Ministry of Education under the 114th Taiwan Girls’ Day program and organized by NCKU’s Gender Equality Education Committee in collaboration with the Tainan City Government Legal Affairs Department, NCKU Counseling and Psychological Services, and NCKU College of Intelligent Semiconductors and Sustainable Manufacturing. The four featured films are: Fwends (墨爾本周末不回家), Queer as Punk (酷兒解放曲), Welcome to Taipei Main Station Hall (歡迎來到北車大客廳), and There Was, There Was Not (不存在的從前從前). These films examine the inner lives of contemporary young women, gender equality and LGBTQ+ rights, the experiences of female migrant workers, and women’s resilience amid war and oppression.
NCKU’s Gender Equality Committee stated that the film festival aims to present diverse gender perspectives and cultural narratives, allowing viewers to engage with intersections of gender and other social issues, such as ethnicity and social class, thereby recognizing voices and needs outside mainstream society. Post-screening discussions, led by invited panelists, provide a platform for deeper exploration of gender and cultural issues, fostering understanding among teachers, students, and community members regarding the social realities depicted in the films. The discussions encourage critical reflection on existing gender concepts, values, attitudes, and issues, promoting gender mainstreaming and guiding participants to challenge stereotypes, biases, and discrimination, ultimately fostering gender harmony and mutual respect.
