National Cheng Kung University (NCKU) has once again been recognized for its excellence in engineering education. In late April, the Kaohsiung Chapter of the Chinese Institute of Engineers announced the recipients of the 2026 “Engineering Professor Award.” Among numerous outstanding candidates, Professor Kai-Wei Chiang from the Department of Surveying and Spatial Information Science and Professor Han-Sheng Chuang, Chair of the Department of Biomedical Engineering, stood out as awardees.
Only four scholars were selected for this year’s award, with NCKU accounting for half of the recipients, demonstrating the university’s strong research capacity and teaching quality. Notably, NCKU has produced award recipients every year since 2018, underscoring its sustained academic excellence.
Professor Kai-Wei Chiang, Department of Surveying and Spatial Information Science, NCKU
Professor Kai-Wei Chiang has devoted over 30 years to research in spatial information engineering, navigation, and mobile technologies, and is widely recognized as a leading scholar in the field. He has made pioneering contributions to AI-enabled multi-sensor fusion, proposing a self-growing neural network (CCN) integration framework that overcomes limitations of traditional navigation filtering methods. His research has had significant international impact.
Beyond academia, Professor Chiang has led efforts to develop Taiwan’s high-precision map system, establishing related standards and validation mechanisms to support autonomous vehicles and intelligent transportation systems. His achievements have received international recognition. He has also actively contributed to professional societies and national science and technology initiatives. Many of his students have won international paper awards, reflecting his excellence in research innovation, industrial application, and talent cultivation—making him a model of engineering education and technological development.
Professor Han-Sheng Chuang, Chair, Department of Biomedical Engineering, NCKU
Professor Han-Sheng Chuang is a pioneer in biomedical microfluidics and sensing technologies. As the leader of the Bio-Microfluidics and Micro-Opto-Electro-Mechanical Systems Laboratory (BMOEMS), he has long been dedicated to developing innovative biosensing platforms based on “Janus particles.” His outstanding research was recently published in the top-tier journal Nature Biomedical Engineering, marking his work as world-leading.
Professor Chuang’s research is highly forward-looking with strong clinical application potential, laying a critical foundation for next-generation biomedical diagnostic technologies. His work holds great promise for precision medicine and has earned numerous honors. He is frequently invited to present at leading international academic forums. In addition, he actively promotes industry–academia collaboration and technology transfer, translating research outcomes into practical applications and demonstrating strong societal and industrial impact.
The Engineering Professor Award established by the Kaohsiung Chapter of the Chinese Institute of Engineers recognizes scholars with outstanding contributions in engineering education, research and development, and industry–academia collaboration. The selection process is highly rigorous, making it one of the most prestigious honors in Taiwan’s engineering community. Awardees receive a gold medal and a plaque in recognition of their exceptional contributions to engineering education and practice.
