NCKU Builds a Comprehensive Support System to Implement Equal Emphasis on Sports and Academics

In recent years, National Cheng Kung University (NCKU) has actively promoted physical fitness and committed itself to creating a friendly environment for school team development. By integrating multiple resources such as personalized academic tutoring, sports science, and sports medicine, NCKU has built a comprehensive support system to assist student-athletes in balancing sports performance and academic development. Under this sound support system, the school teams have achieved remarkable results in various varsity leagues and the National Intercollegiate Athletic Games, fully demonstrating NCKU’s results in emphasizing both sports and education. This not only places NCKU consistently among the top research universities over the long term, but also attracts an increasing number of outstanding student-athletes to enroll, forming a positive cycle that further enhances NCKU's competitive strength.
In the 2025–2026 academic year, NCKU school teams delivered outstanding performances in various intercollegiate leagues: the men's soccer team placed fourth in Division I, the women's basketball team took third place in Division II, the baseball team won third place in Division II, and the softball team secured second place in the tournament. These stellar achievements demonstrate that NCKU has laid a solid and competitive foundation in sports.
Starting in the 2025–2026 academic year, NCKU implemented an academic tutoring mechanism for student-athletes, tailoring learning support schemes according to individual student needs and pairing them with high-achieving students on campus for one-on-one or small-group tutoring to assist student-athletes in balancing training and academic studies. After a semester of tutoring, multiple students reported having a clearer plan and execution of their study schedules, while also gradually mastering effective learning strategies. To date, a cumulative total of 36 students have received tutoring, significantly alleviating their academic stress and tangibly showcasing NCKU’s effectiveness in advancing dual track development in both sports and academics.
Under the promotion of Director Jenn-Jier James Lien of the Smart Sports Technology Center, NCKU has gradually introduced scientific training and sports medicine into the daily training of school teams. Through professional support such as fitness monitoring, movement analysis, and injury prevention, it not only helps improve athletes' training quality and athletic performance, but also effectively reduces the risk of sports injuries, creating a safer and higher-efficiency training environment.
To broaden student-athletes' international perspectives, NCKU actively introduces international academic resources and specially invited Prof. David Moreau from the Centre for Brain Research at the University of Auckland, New Zealand, to deliver a lecture. Prof. Moreau was formerly a member of the French national wrestling team and is currently among the top 2% of global scientists. During the session, he shared his mental journey from a top athlete to an academic researcher, providing a highly inspiring paradigm of cross-disciplinary career transition for NCKU's student-athletes. Such international exchange activities help students expand their future development directions and boost their competitiveness in both sports expertise and academic fields.
The NCKU Office of Academic Affairs stated that it will continue to optimize the support system for student-athletes, integrating teaching, research, and practical application to build a comprehensive cultivation environment that encompasses athletic capability, academic development, and career transition. Through a well-rounded support system, NCKU is not only dedicated to cultivating outstanding athletes, but also hopes to nurture sports talent equipped with interdisciplinary capabilities and professional literacy, assisting students in developing steadily across every stage of life to realize a sustainable vision for the integration of sports and education.
