Taiwan’s First AI-Powered Badminton Tournament: The 2026 "33rd Yikun NCKU Badminton Open" Smartly Kicks Off July 15–19
Themed "Blueprint for Victory," the visual design of the 33rd Yikun NCKU Badminton Open symbolizes athletes charting their course and striving for victory on the court, echoing the event's ongoing spirit of heritage and innovation. Beyond the high attendance each year, the introduction of Taiwan's first AI digital service serves as the core highlight of 2026.
The AI digital service platform was conceptualized and developed by Yen-Tse Tu, a first-year master's student in the Department of Electrical Engineering, who previously served as Public Relations Director for the 31st Yikun NCKU Badminton Open and captain of the varsity badminton team. Having participated in organizing the tournament for four consecutive years, Tu observed that participants' inquiries were highly repetitive yet scattered across different platforms, which increased the staff's workload and forced players to spend time hunting for information. Leveraging his expertise in systems engineering, he created a one-stop service portal integrating 24-hour AI chatbot Q&A, player ID checks, and match schedule inquiries, allowing players to focus their time on preparation and performance rather than searching for information. He expressed special gratitude to the NCKU Badminton Alumni Association for its strong support and initial funding, enabling the tournament to combine its fine traditions with digital innovation.
Serving as developer, organizer, and athlete, Tu confessed that the biggest challenge was planning, developing, and testing the system entirely on his own while balancing full functionality with user experience. He shared that for many people, the NCKU Badminton Open is far more than just a tournament—it is one of the most cherished memories of the year. Through his technical skills, he hoped every participant could feel the genuine care and dedication behind the event. As an athlete on the court, he promised to give his all and enjoy every match and the high-energy atmosphere.
Alongside the exciting matches, this year launched an online official store selling past commemorative jerseys and various new limited-edition merchandise, providing a convenient shopping experience with transparent and manageable inventory control, allowing players to take home unique memories of the NCKU Badminton Open. Furthermore, the event continued its tradition of social welfare by partnering with the Genesis Social Welfare Foundation to set up receipt donation boxes, while organizing interactive activities with the Tainan Hui-Xin Care Association and VICTOR Sports to spread social care and positive energy.
Lin Yen-Chen, a rising senior in the Department of Biotechnology and General Coordinator of the event, noted that as the tournament expands each year, the logistics become increasingly complex. The organizing team expressed deep gratitude to the NCKU Alumni Association Center, NCKU EMBA Alumni Association, and NCKU Badminton Alumni Association for co-organizing the event. Their support provided crucial resources while strengthening alumni solidarity. Gratitude was also extended to senior alumni, sponsoring organizations, participants, and spectators for their continued backing.
The organizing team reminded participants to listen to their bodies, warm up properly, and prioritize post-match recovery during the dense competition schedule. While winning and losing matter, the true value lies in accumulating experience, making friends with opponents, and feeling the passion and connections brought by badminton. The team hopes the annual NCKU Badminton Open serves not only as a tournament, but as a premier platform where badminton enthusiasts nationwide gather at NCKU to exchange skills and camaraderie—a summer event eagerly anticipated every year. Moving forward, the team will continue introducing innovative services to enhance the tournament experience for both participants and spectators.
