Zi Yu Sun Was Invited to Present Her Research of New Possibilities of Hyaluronic Acid Treatment for Parkinson's Disease in U.S.A
Hyaluronic Acid can not only be used for Aesthetic Medicine, it may be possible to treat Parkinson’s Disease in the future! Zi-Yu,Sun from the Institute of Molecular Medicine,NCKU was invited to the U.S. by American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, ASBMB to deliver a speech on her novel research topic, becoming the youngest postgraduate invited in the 2022 Experimental Biology, EB.
In the past 15 years, there have been 8 students of Distinguished Professor,Nan-Shan,Zhang have received awards from the U.S., and three of them have been invited to the U.S. to share their research results on stage. According to professor Zhang,it is really difficult to be invited to deliver a speech by ASBMB. In Glycans minisymposium, only 4 researchers were selected from the global competition, among them, Zi-Yu,Sun was the only one from Taiwan, coming from NCKU. She was the youngest and was attending as a master’s student, while the rest are PhD, postdoctoral researchers, or assistant professors. Therefore, professor Zhang encourages students to be brave while they are young and explore the infinite possibilities in a wider world.
The speech topic Zi-Yu,Sun delivered was “Conformationally altered hyaluronan mitigates the symptoms of Parkinson's disease in mice’’ Her advising professor, Nan-Shan,Zhang said that the purified Hyaluronic Acid can be used for Aesthetic Medicine but it can’t suppress neurodegenerative disorder. Their laboratory has developed a modified form of hyaluronic acid that can inhibit tumors. Recently, they found that this kind of hyaluronic acid can also suppress symptoms of neurodegenerative disorder, for example, Epileptic Seizure, Parkinson's Disease, and Alzheimer's Disease.
Parkinson's Disease is one of the three neurodegenerative disorders. So far, there are over 10 million people who have suffered from it worldwide. Among them, the proportion of elderly people is more significant, and the disorder is still difficult to be cured. Zi-Yu,Sun said that Taiwan is getting close to an aging society in recent years. Therefore, the research aimed to investigate how the potential role of constitutionally altered hyaluronic acid can be used to develop future treatments for Parkinson's disease. She also hopes that her research will help to alleviate and improve the symptoms of Parkinson's disease and contribute to the future of humanity.
EB is regarded as the largest annual event in the field of international life science and medicine, and it is co-held by five major societies in the U.S. Among them, ASBMB is the most authoritative and well-known. ASBMB has more than 12,000 members in scientific and education organizations around the world, many esteemed scientists are its members, such as Emmanuelle Charpentier, a French microbiologist, who won the 2020 Nobel Prize in Chemistry, and Jennifer A. Doudna, an American biochemist.
Prof. Zhang said that ASBMB is a highly talented association which has a winner of the Nobel Prize almost every year. What’s more, ASBMB published many forward-looking journals, for example, Journal of Biological Chemistry, Molecular & Cellular Proteomics, etc, which demonstrated its academic impact.
The five major societies that held EB includes American Association of Anatomists, American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, American Physiological Society, American Society for Investigative Pathology, and American Society for Pharmacology & Experimental Therapeutics. Each EB annual conference attracts tens of thousands of scientists and biotech companies from all over the world. The companies will present the latest technologies and products in the field of biotechnology and medicine. Thousands of posters are presented during the conference, covering a wide range of research areas: physiology, pathology, biochemistry, and other interdisciplinary research integration.
