Prof. Shaw Jenq, Tsai Received Ministry of Education Academic Award for His Research on Endometriosis and Molecular Mechanism
Professor Tsai from NCKU has a great result in his research of Endometriosis and the molecular mechanism of cancer, and has been recognized by the international academic community. He received Fuller W. Bazer SSR InternationalScientist Award in 2020, which is a glory of Taiwan. The Ministry of Education annually recognizes those who have actively engaged in academic research and have made significant contributions or outstanding achievements that have been recognized by the academic community, and professor Tsai received the 65th Academic Award of Ministry of Education.
Professor Tsai’s research mainly focuses on the molecular mechanism of human disease, especially the reason of Endometriosis and Cancer Drug Resistance. So far, he has already published about 130 research papers and has been cited more than 7700 times, making him one of the world’s top 2% scientists.
In terms of cancer research, professor Tsai mainly explores the mechanism of drug resistance induced by hypoxia in cancer cells. His greatest contribution to academic research is the publication of the world’s first paper reporting the biological function of circular RNAs, which received the Most-cited Article Published in 2017 Cancer Research from AACR.
Since cancer research journals have a long history, are highly scrutinized, and have the highest number of citations among 600 articles, it must be an innovative discovery that may shock the academic world. Professor Tsai has not only proposed the theory of how circular RNAs promote cancer metastasis, but also provides evidence from human and animal experiments to prove it, and this is the first paper in Taiwan to receive this honor.
In terms of Endometriosis research, through a series of molecular biology and cytology experiments, Professor Tsai proved that
ectopic tissue can synthesize female hormones from cholesterol. The research has rewritten the molecular pathology of the hormones necessary for endometriosis to survive. It not only explains why hormonal treatments fail, but also provides a possible alternative treatment that solves the unsolved mystery. This also made Professor Tsai being selected as the only winner of Fuller W. Bazer SSR International Scientist Award in 2020.
All the achievements above are the results from professor Tsai and all his students for the past 20 years. Because of the innovative and influential nature of the results, Professor Tsai has been invited to give 27 speeches abroad in the past 5 years, greatly enhancing the international academic visibility of the country. In addition, he also conducted national diplomacy through academic exchange, demonstrating Taiwan’s soft power, and his contribution went beyond academics.
Meanwhile, Professor Tsai actively committed to academic service both on and off the campus. He is a rigorous scholar and is willing to promote future generations. He believes that to do research, one should be “materialistic and rational” and build up a solid foundation to be able to enrich oneself. As for students, Professor Tsai often encourages them to be a happy postgraduate. He believes that research is the only legal and cost-free business, and it is a great joy to use national resources to fulfill one’s dream. Therefore, students should be brave to dream and try to accomplish one’s dream in their student times.
The Ministry of Education has set the Academic Awards to encourage academic research and enhance academic standards. The recipients of the award are those who have actively engaged in academic research in Taiwan and have significant contributions or outstanding achievements that have been recognized by the academic world; those who don’t have R.O.C citizenship should possess at least 5 years of full-time experience in a school or academic institution in Taiwan. The Academic Award includes 5 fields: the Humanities and Arts; Social Science; Mathematics and Natural Science; Biology, and Medical and Agricultural Science; and Engineering and Applied Science. The Academic Awards are awarded annually, and a maximum total of eighteen people each year may receive an Academic Award.
