NCKU Student Earns First TAICA Certificate in "Specialty + AI" Cross-Disciplinary Program

Synergy Correlation

National Cheng Kung University (NCKU) is actively promoting cross-disciplinary talent cultivation. Through interdisciplinary credit programs, specialized micro-programs, and flexible cross-disciplinary academic systems, NCKU encourages students to build upon their primary majors while proactively exploring emerging technologies to foster composite capabilities in "specialty + AI."

Furthermore, the Ministry of Education established the "Taiwan Academic AI Program Alliance" (TAICA) starting in the 2024 academic year to integrate AI teaching resources across domestic higher education institutions, offering students cross-school learning opportunities and establishing a certification mechanism. NCKU has contributed 23 faculty members and accumulated over 1,200 student course enrollments. On the 25th, the Ministry of Education held its first certificate presentation ceremony for program credits, where NCKU Department of Hydraulic and Ocean Engineering graduate Chu Kuan-Lin received the nation's very first TAICA program certificate, demonstrating NCKU's concrete achievements in cultivating "specialty + AI" interdisciplinary talent.

Originally majoring in water resources engineering, Chu developed a strong interest in information technology. During his undergraduate studies, he applied for a double major in Computer Science and Information Engineering. After completing foundational courses such as programming and algorithms, he further enrolled in advanced AI courses offered by other top universities through TAICA. Over four semesters, he completed a total of 10 courses worth 30 credits and earned the "AI Exploration and Application Credit Program" certificate.

Chu expressed that TAICA "filled in the most crucial puzzle piece in my learning journey." Cross-school courses broke through the limitations of individual universities and departments. Asynchronous classes allowed him to deepen his understanding of algorithms and mathematical concepts at his own pace, while synchronous discussions enabled him to exchange ideas with students from different schools and departments across Taiwan. Completing the entire program allowed him to successfully bridge "water resources engineering, computer science fundamentals, and advanced AI applications."

NCKU's Center for Teaching and Learning Development stated that the AI era requires not only specialized AI experts, but also talent capable of bringing AI into different professional domains. Starting from water resources, combining a double major in computer science with cross-school AI learning, Chu serves as a prime example of NCKU's successful "specialty + AI" cross-disciplinary cultivation. The key to the future lies not in choosing a single academic discipline, but in creating diverse possibilities through interdisciplinary learning. National Cheng Kung University has launched multi-tiered, flexible cross-disciplinary learning mechanisms to help students convert the unknown into confidence and turn interests into competence, guiding them toward the future and ensuring they are well-prepared for what lies ahead.
