NCKU Science Education Center 2023 High School Teacher Workshop & Facility Visits

Synergy Correlation

2023 High School Teacher Workshop (Southern Region)" jointly organized by the Science Education Center of the College of Science at National Cheng Kung University (NCKU Science Education Center) and the Office for the Promotion of Science Education for Taiwan's Special Talents kicked off on the first day after the Spring Festival, January 30, at the NCKU Science Education Center. The NCKU Science Education Center specifically arranged for a visit to enterprises and cutting-edge laboratories in the afternoon. Over the course of 3 days, nearly 100 high school teachers from northern, central, and southern Taiwan gathered to exchange ideas and share experiences. They visited core facilities at NCKU, Aerospace Industrial Development Corporation, and the NCKU Quantum Center, allowing the participating teachers to understand NCKU's contributions to scientific research and Taiwan's capabilities in various industries, including semiconductors and aerospace.

The first day of the workshop was opened by Professor Hsu-Cheng Hsu from the Department of Photonics, who delivered an engaging "Journey through Photonics." Not only did he provide a clear introduction to photonics technology, but he also allowed the teachers to conduct optical experiments hands-on. One teacher expressed, "It's very exciting and moving to do experiments again after 20 years since graduation." In the afternoon, Associate Professor Pin-Chieh Wu from the Department of Photonics led the high school teachers on a visit to "NCKU Core Facilities," providing them with a deeper understanding of semiconductor processes and research.

On the second day, January 31, Professor Yi Yang from the Department of Physics, who is also the director of the Science Education Center, discussed the world of particle physics with the teachers. He also shared insights into NCKU's participation in the "AMS Project" hosted by Nobel laureate Samuel Ting, including experiences and interesting stories from collaboration with NASA and foreign teams. In the afternoon, with the special assistance of Aerospace Industrial Development Corp, the teachers visited the "Aerospace Industrial Development Corporation's Aircraft Engine Division" in Gangshan, allowing them to gain a better understanding of Taiwan's aerospace industry and its capabilities in national aircraft manufacturing. Many teachers were excited to see actual fighter jet engines up close and gained a profound impression of Taiwan's capabilities in the aerospace industry during this visit.

The Nobel Prize in Physics in 2022 was awarded for research on "quantum entanglement." Therefore, on the morning of the third day, February 1, the NCKU Science Education Center cooperated with the "NCKU Center for Quantum Frontiers of Research & Technology" (NCKU Quantum Center) to arrange for the teachers to learn about the mysteries of "quantum science." The program, conducted by Professor Yueh-Nan Chen's team from the NCKU Quantum Center, introduced the basics of quantum physics and practical operations of quantum computers, followed by a visit to Professor Tse-Ming Chen's quantum computer laboratory in the Department of Physics, allowing the teachers to engage with cutting-edge quantum research. In the afternoon, Professor Yi Yang, director of the NCKU Science Education Center, introduced the "College of Science Science Education Center" and led the teachers in a hands-on "cloud chamber experiment" to understand the omnipresent cosmic rays, concluding the workshop.

With special assistance from Aerospace Industrial Development Corp., teachers are arranged to visit the Aerospace Engine Business Division located in Gangshan.
