Members of the NCKU Civil Engineering Department's EQ_LAB participated in the competition, with representatives including Yao-Yu Song, Chih-Chieh Yeh, Cheng-Wei Huang, and Chieh-Min Lin, all from the first year of the master's program. In addition, Bo-Hsun Chen and Chao-Chi Chen, also first-year master's students, along with intern François Burban from ISAE-SUPMECA in France, participated in the competition. The team, supported by the College of Engineering, competed in the "2023 Seismic Design Competition - International Earthquake Engineering Model-Making Contest (IDEERS 2023)" held from September 21 to 23, securing another excellent result and receiving recognition with the first prize.
The International Demonstration of Earthquake Engineering Research in Schools (IDEERS) is an annual international competition organized by the National Center for Research on Earthquake Engineering of the National Applied Research Laboratories in Taiwan, taking place at the National Center for Research on Earthquake Engineering's Taipei Laboratory. NCKU's Civil Engineering Department EQ_LAB has been participating in the competition every year since 2006. Due to the improved domestic epidemic situation in 2022, only domestic schools were allowed to participate. However, with the global easing of the pandemic in 2023, the competition opened to international schools, totaling 101 teams and nearly 500 participants from high school, college, and graduate student categories. In the graduate student category with 11 teams from both domestic and international institutions, the NCKU Civil EQ_LAB team, after winning second prize in 2006, participation award in 2007, participation award in 2013, second prize in 2019, and participation award and the Zhongxing Engineering Consultant Co., Ltd.'s Innovative Award in 2022, finally clinched the first prize in 2023, completing the collection of all awards from 2006 to 2023. This achievement underscores the continuous improvement of NCKU's civil engineering team.
The participating students expressed that since the first participation of EQ_LAB in 2006, seniors have continually passed down the experiences they gained from the competition, allowing the current team to avoid unfavorable factors. They also credited the Structural Materials Laboratory of the Civil Engineering Department, which provides vibration table equipment and comprehensive operational training. This support enables them to continuously simulate the competition scenario, gaining an advantage. The first prize is not only the result of the team's efforts but also the result of the teachers, seniors, and the excellent equipment provided by the Civil Engineering Department, creating a conducive environment. The students expressed their commitment to pass down the experiences to junior students, ensuring NCKU's continued success in future Seismic Design Competitions.
