Synergy Correlation

With a total prize pool of up to 3 million NT dollars, the "First National Defense UAV Challenge" organized by the National Cheng Kung University Wang Assist System Engineering Research Center under the guidance of the National Science and Technology Commission is the only challenge event in the country aimed at developing autonomous defense technology. The registration period for this edition ran from February 13 to March 1, 2023, inviting teams from academia, industry, and research units to participate in the development of advanced defense technology and explore future applications of drones, thereby realizing the goal of enhancing our country's defense autonomy.

The Wang Assist System Engineering Research Center at NCKU stated that drone technology, which is rapidly advancing and widely applied in various fields, particularly shines in the realm of national defense. The future of warfare is moving towards unmanned and intelligent development, with drones emerging as a significant highlight in modern military history. From conflicts in Asia to the Ukraine-Russia war, the use of drones on the battlefield has demonstrated significant combat value. Consequently, the government is actively promoting the development of key drone technologies and encouraging the enhancement of dual-use military-civilian technology capabilities. Hence, this challenge aims to facilitate cooperation between academia, industry, and research to develop key technologies and cultivate advanced technology talents, thereby enhancing our country's defense capabilities and autonomy.

The challenge consists of two stages. In the first stage, preliminary selection is based on the conceptual proposals of each team, with an expected selection of 6 teams to enter the finals, each receiving a prize of 300,000 NT dollars. In the second stage, teams will conduct subsystem verification and physical demonstrations based on the challenge items. After evaluation based on innovation, applicability, technical content, and defense requirements, one outstanding team will be selected to receive a prize of 1.5 million NT dollars, while two excellent teams will each receive a prize of 750,000 NT dollars.

The highlight of this challenge lies in its departure from the standardized format of previous drone competitions. Instead, it adopts a self-defined theme of defense applications for unmanned aerial vehicles as the challenge, encouraging talents from all sectors to utilize real battlefield scenarios for the development of key technologies and the integration of military drone systems, such as UAV systems and defense payload systems. Moreover, the challenge will promote matchmaking and exchanges among relevant industries, aiming to stimulate academia under government guidance, integrate the most suitable defense technology blueprint for our country's development, and bring together experts from the industry and research units to further cultivate talent in defense technology applications, thereby creating an opportunity for the integration of cutting-edge technology in defense drones and enriching the hard power of drone applications in our country.
