"Where there is a university, there is hope," remarked Deputy President Yau-Hwang Kuo of NCKU during the opening ceremony. He emphasized the university's role in gathering the latest and most professional knowledge and nurturing talent, stressing the importance of applying talent and knowledge in practical settings to address future needs and societal demands.
Representing Tainan Mayor Wei-che Huang, Director-General Hsin-chi Wang of the Tainan City Labor Affairs Bureau attended the fair's opening ceremony and visited several corporate booths beforehand. Director-General Wang noted that many companies emphasized the importance of recruiting talent from NCKU, underscoring the significance of the event to the industry. He also highlighted Tainan's consistently low unemployment rate in recent years, attributing it to the collaborative efforts of various sectors.
Hui-Xiang Xu, Deputy Director of the Yunlin-Chiayi-Tainan Branch of the Workforce Development Agency of the Ministry of Labor, described the fair as the largest in southern Taiwan, with many companies eager to participate. She expressed hope that companies and job seekers could find the best talent and jobs amidst the sunny weather in the south. She also encouraged collaboration for employment services, vocational training, skill certification, and entrepreneurship in anticipation of the looming labor shortage era.
The on-site recruitment activities of the 2023 Career Fair in Southern Taiwan ran from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The opening ceremony in the morning was attended by representatives from several co-organizing schools, public agencies, and industry sectors. Notable attendees included Dian-Chih Pei, Director of the Semiconductor Products Division at Taiwan Applied Materials Co., Ltd.; Yu-chih Chuang, Executive Director of United Microelectronics Corporation; and Yu-Shun Chou, Senior Manager of Recruitment at Taiwan ASML Technology Co., Ltd.
Jointly organized by NCKU and 11 other institutions of higher education in southern Taiwan, the fair featured 53 sessions of corporate recruitment briefings from March 9th to 12th. Job seekers from inside and outside the university, regardless of status or age, could register online to participate. The on-site event on the 12th featured 324 booths representing a diverse range of industries, including manpower agencies, public enterprises, semiconductors, transportation, logistics, optoelectronics, retail, real estate, finance, insurance, construction, professional, scientific and technical services, educational services, software and networks, electronics, telecommunications, computer peripherals, manufacturing, catering, tourism, hospitality, environmental protection, healthcare, and more. Notably, the Military Recruiting Center sought 1,200 new recruits, while TSMC and Sinyi Realty each offered positions for 1,000 and 945 individuals, respectively. Additionally, Delta Electronics, Realtek, the Industrial Technology Research Institute, and the Institute for Information Industry each offered over 500 job opportunities.
Major exhibitors at the fair included United Microelectronics Corporation, Yageo Corporation, Taiwan Applied Materials Co., Ltd., ASML, Realtek Semiconductor Corp., Wistron Corporation, Chunghwa Telecom Co., Ltd., ASUSTeK Computer Inc., Innolux Corporation, MediaTek Inc., Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company, Foxconn Technology Group, Corning Incorporated, and Far Eastern Group, among others, attracting numerous job seekers. Many companies offered engaging activities to attract job seekers' attention, such as Taiwan Cement's electric car challenge game, which familiarized participants with Taiwan Cement's ventures beyond cement, including renewable energy, electric vehicle batteries, and green energy-related industries.
To enhance the diversity of recruitment, the organizers added labels indicating the demand for doctoral students in addition to domestic and foreign students, aiming to strengthen the employment opportunities for doctoral graduates. According to statistics, 172 companies at the fair sought doctoral graduates, while 162 offered opportunities for foreign students. The newly added co-organizer for this year, the Investment Division of the Ministry of Economic Affairs (Contact TAIWAN), also set up a booth to assist foreign students in staying and working in Taiwan.
The fair took place across various locations on the Guangfu Campus, including the Chung Cheng Hall, Yun Ping Plaza, and the Student Activity Center. Students from the Department of Chemical Engineering and the Institute of Photonics at NCKU expressed satisfaction with the abundance of booths, allowing them to familiarize themselves with many companies. They expressed hope for even larger-scale events in the future, aiming not to be outdone by northern universities. Additionally, students from the Department of Business Administration at Kaohsiung University were keen on understanding the recruitment needs of foreign companies and praised the diverse range of industries represented at the fair, noting the clear layout that made navigation easy.
