WIN Semiconductors Vice Chairman Yu-Chi Wang Shares Insights on Three-Five Compounds Accelerating Global Connectivity at NCKU
Following a series of lectures by heavyweight speakers from the semiconductor industry in 2022, the NCKU's Academy of Innovative Semiconductor and Sustainable Manufacturing launched the first "Master Lecture Series" of the year in 2023. Yu-Chi Wang, Vice Chairman and Vice President of WIN Semiconductors Co., Ltd., was invited to give a speech titled "Three-Five Compounds Accelerating Global Connectivity," and was presented with the "Industrial Innovation Lecture" by NCKU President Meng-Ru Shen, in appreciation of his excellent presentation.
President Meng-Ru Shen expressed anticipation for the knowledge feast of the day, highlighting the need for clinicians and engineers to continually learn new things as science evolves rapidly.
During his speech on the 24th, Yu-Chi Wang began by explaining what semiconductors and transistors are, touching upon the process of semiconductor invention at Bell Labs in 1947, and the various applications of three-five compound semiconductors in daily life, such as smartphones, WIFI, and light bulbs. He also shared his 23-year journey at Stably.
Looking into the future, Wang envisioned scenarios like remote medical surgery, autonomous driving, and 6G smart applications. He emphasized that future life lies in AIoT, the combination of artificial intelligence and the Internet of Things, requiring ultra-high-speed network transmission of massive amounts of data. The application of three-five compound semiconductors encompasses 3D sensors, energy saving, satellite communication, etc., which will change our future lives.
Before joining WIN Semiconductors in 1999, Yu-Chi Wang was a researcher in the high-speed electronic component research department at Bell Labs, where significant inventions such as transistors, lasers, and solar cells were born. Wang noted that young people have an advantage, as they bring fresh perspectives and are often more adaptable to learning. He also shared the challenges faced during the early days of Stably, including the bursting of the dot-com bubble and the SARS epidemic, emphasizing the importance of continuous adjustment and facing various challenges.
Established in 1999 and located in the Hwa Ya Technology Park in Linkou, WIN Semiconductors is the world's first professional wafer foundry service company to produce gallium arsenide microwave integrated circuits (GaAs MMIC) on 6-inch wafers.
Education should aim for the future and closely integrate with external trends. The College of Intelligent Semiconductor and Sustainable Manufacturing at NCKU integrates concepts such as artificial intelligence (AI), big data analysis, the Internet of Things (IoT), smart manufacturing, sustainability, green technology, and carbon neutrality to actively cultivate students into comprehensive future technology talents. In 2022, six industry master lectures and three industry-academic lectures were launched, featuring experts from various fields sharing their observations on the latest developments in the semiconductor industry and their personal career development stories, receiving widespread acclaim.
