The Impact Investing Campus Tour Forum at NCKU on the 20th featured lively discussions on sustainable talent.
The forum was organized by National Cheng Kung University, the Taiwan Impact Investing Association (TIIA), and Cathay Financial Holdings, with the NCKU College of Social Sciences as a co-organizer. On the afternoon of November 20, in the North Lecture Hall of the College of Social Sciences, NCKU Vice President Wei-Zhe Zhuang delivered a speech, sharing his observations from NCKU's Industry-Academia Innovation Day. He noted that students from the College of Social Sciences excel in translating technical knowledge into understandable language, which greatly benefits startup teams. He emphasized that NCKU is a comprehensive university, and students are fortunate to interact with a diverse range of people, gaining not only knowledge but also communication and teamwork skills. He encouraged students to take advantage of opportunities to engage in interdisciplinary exchanges.
Cathay Financial Holdings' Deputy General Manager of Administration, Shao-Ling Weng, stated that impact investing uses the core functions of the financial industry to generate positive societal impact, responding to the needs of the modern era. Cathay encourages the younger generation to explore diverse issues and become key forces in sustainable development. She also warmly welcomed NCKU students and encouraged them to seek career advice and exchanges.
Following that, TIIA Executive Director Dao-Kui Wu delivered a keynote speech titled "Mastering Impact Investing: The Second Half of the SDGs - Why, What, and How." He shared with the audience how investment concepts can change the world, balancing investment profits and social benefits. Wu emphasized the importance of staying abreast of new trends and encouraged everyone to lead impactful lives. He mentioned that impact investing is a new trend today, and embracing it will enhance personal growth and contribute to sustainability. He explained that impact investing offers students learning, growth, entrepreneurship, employment opportunities, doing good while becoming wealthy, and even helping to make personal decisions. By using a dual bottom line (social impact and investment profits), students can benefit from the "impact dividend" while contributing to society and achieving financial freedom.
After the keynote speech, Dao-Kui Wu hosted a specialized lecture with Shao-Ling Weng, where she shared Cathay's SDGs and sustainable investment practices. She highlighted how the talent market is changing, with Cathay’s workforce encompassing 13 academic fields, including engineering, architecture, medicine, and psychology. Regardless of current major, Cathay welcomes all talents. In today’s rapidly changing, complex era, Cathay values abilities such as problem-solving, AI digital skills, teamwork, proactivity, learning ability, agility, and communication skills. She encouraged students to boldly experience life and participate in various activities to cultivate the abilities needed to lead future change.
Finally, NCKU College of Social Sciences DeanQun-Li Cai discussed the integration of university social responsibility (USR) and SDGs, sharing diverse case studies. He noted that NCKU ranked as Taiwan’s top university for impact for five consecutive years. In 2016, NCKU became the first university in Taiwan to integrate SDGs into its educational mission. The proportion of SDGs-related teaching has been growing annually, and NCKU students are effectively receiving sustainable talent development. He emphasized that fostering sustainable thinking will enable students to turn sustainable actions into daily practices in the future. Besides interdisciplinary learning and AI applications, students should also strengthen their social responsibility, believing that combining professional skills with empathy will allow them to exert greater influence in the future.
