2023 Biomedical Engineering Education Joint Exhibition: First Domestic Theme-Based Educational Exhibition Receives High Praise
The "2023 Biomedical Engineering Education Joint Exhibition" called for the participation of biomedical engineering departments from 10 universities across Taiwan to promote their programs at NCKU. This marked the first collaborative effort among public and private universities in Taiwan to organize a single educational exhibition and recruitment event for a specific academic department. The event emphasized providing high school students and parents with a comprehensive understanding of the biomedical engineering field and the unique features of each participating university's program in one place, receiving considerable attention and positive feedback from numerous students and parents.
Participating universities in the "2023 Biomedical Engineering Education Joint Exhibition" included NCKU, National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University, National Central University, Taipei Medical University, Chung Yuan Christian University, Tzu Chi University, Da-Yeh University, Ming Chuan University, China Medical University, and I-Shou University. To facilitate accessibility, the event was divided into two sessions: the northern session held at Chung Yuan Christian University on March 4th and the southern session held at NCKU on March 11th.
On the day of the event on March 11th, not only did students from southern counties enthusiastically participate, but many students from northern and central regions also traveled to NCKU to attend the exhibition. Their aim was to gain in-depth insights into the biomedical engineering field and learn about the distinctive features of biomedical engineering programs offered by universities across different regions of Taiwan. Despite being the inaugural biomedical engineering joint exhibition, the event attracted a significant number of students and parents due to its specificity and uniqueness, according to the organizers from NCKU's biomedical engineering department.
The southern session of the "2023 Biomedical Engineering Education Joint Exhibition" at NCKU drew a total of 328 students and parents. In addition to activities such as understanding biomedical engineering, sharing unique features of each university, interacting with booth representatives and students, and visiting laboratory facilities, the event focused on assisting high school students in understanding the process of selecting majors, preparing application materials, and participating in interviews. The overarching goal of the event was to increase awareness and interest in joining the biomedical engineering community.
According to feedback from student surveys after the event, the greatest takeaway was a deeper understanding of the field of study. For high school students, who often face numerous choices when selecting a university major, lack of information about specific majors may hinder their decision-making process. Through this event, students not only learned about the teaching and research characteristics of various biomedical engineering programs but also interacted with faculty and students from different universities, further enhancing their understanding of the field and increasing their willingness to pursue biomedical engineering studies.
Parents who attended the event expressed their appreciation for the opportunity for their children to interact directly with faculty and senior students from various universities. Whether their children were freshmen considering major options, sophomores exploring different disciplines, or seniors waiting to finalize their university preferences, the event provided valuable insights into various academic programs and assisted in setting and choosing career goals. The event's significant benefit lay not only in helping students clarify their future academic paths but also in allowing parents to gain a better understanding of the unique features of biomedical engineering programs, making it a valuable experience for all participants.
