NCKU's cross-school teams, "Here to hear" and "G-OLD", secured gold and bronze medals in the 2023 UAiTED Innovation Competition.
The UAiTED (Universal Association for the Advancement of Technology and Education) Innovation Competition, organized by the Global Industry-Academia Future Talent Development Strategy Alliance, focuses on business and technological innovation. It invites young scholars to unleash their creativity and collaborate on innovative entrepreneurial proposals, contributing to global sustainable development efforts. The 2023 UAiTED Innovation Competition was held in Malaysia on August 5th, with a final and award ceremony. The competition attracted participation from 16 top universities from Malaysia, Hong Kong, Singapore, and Taiwan, with nearly 300 outstanding participants. Teams "Here to hear" and "G-OLD" from the Department of Biomedical Engineering at NCKU participated, winning the gold and bronze medals, respectively, in the 2023 UAiTED competition.
After two rounds of competition, six teams comprising 34 individuals advanced to the finals, with Taiwan accounting for 15 finalists. Guided by the organizers, students analyzed unmet clinical needs to design their competition projects. Here to Hear team members from NCKU included Zon-Gwei Lin, Zi-Qi Xu , and Qian-Yu Li, alongside students from other universities. "Here to hear" designed an "Intelligent Hearing Aid Device with Spatial Target Localization" that utilizes stereo source tracking using microphone arrays to instantly determine the source of sound and identify its location, enhancing the user's auditory spatial perception and situational awareness, thus preventing accidents such as rear car honks. They also discovered the outdoor risks faced by elderly individuals with hearing loss and enhanced their willingness and safety to communicate outdoors through emergency notification design and community safety network connectivity. The community safety network connectivity service also represents a potential future benefit of the product.
"G-OLD" team members from NCKU included Ruan-Yin Lin and Zhi-Yun Chen, alongside students from other universities. "G-OLD" designed an "Intelligent Home Care Assistant," a non-wearable health monitoring device for home use that utilizes Wi-Fi sensing technology to monitor vital signs, sleep patterns, fall detection, and motion identification, specifically addressing the problems of elderly individuals living alone or families too busy to care for the elderly. The device is ideal for remotely monitoring the health status of the elderly to provide specific treatments and care in a timely manner. Both teams were mentored by Julian Pan, Chairman of the Board of SEMICAPS, commissioned by the organizers, guiding the teams on effectively presenting technological features, analyzing the marketability, patentability, and industrial applicability of their proposed topics, and finally planning the development schedule and required entrepreneurial resources.
Through the UAiTED entrepreneurship competition, students not only learn how to communicate and collaborate with students from other countries but also understand the need for locally adaptable product ideation. Different national conditions require different planning to better meet local market demands. Through this international competition, students not only acquire the ability to plan innovative products but also gain experience and perspective in international cooperation, benefiting greatly from the experience.
